In another temperature scale, - 40 degrees Celsius is a balmy 233 degrees Kelvin, and -5O degrees is a slightly cooler 223 degrees Kelvin. At 0 degrees Kelvin all molec- ular activity comes to an abrupt standstill. To get closerand closer to absolute zero (0 degrees Kelvin) we must use processes to draw away the heat. By removing the heat we natu- rally enough make it cold. We cannot obtain absolute zero because there are no substances that will draw away that tiny amount of heat. We can now get within fractions of absolute zero but we cannot obtain it complete- I'm sure most of you have heard about the science of super- conductivity. This science involves dropping temperatures to around 7 degrees Kelvin. Research has shown thefe is no resistance to the flow of elec- trons at these and lower tempera- tures. With no electron resistance there will be no heat build up with the result of delivering very efficient power. Recent studies with complex compounds have shown that higher temperatures in excess of 100 degrees Kelvin (that's still around -173 degrees Celsius) can achieve superconductivity. We can now appreciate how "cold" cold can be. One day, research will develop new materi- als that will require. very little electricity to power vast complex- es and machinery with a substan- tial saving on our resources and pocketbooks.
