Even with the windows open the interior of a car can become hot enough in 15 minutes to cause irreversible damage to your dog. Dog's cannot perspire except by panting. In a hot car they have no means of replenishing any moisture for their systems. Please remember your pets this summer. Leave plenty of water for them if they are tied up outside. If you're going to be late coming home, have someone feed and water your pet. Provide a shady area for them to rest during the hot periods of the day. 'Also remember to check for any signs of insect bites, such as fleas, ticks or black flies. Many dogs and cats are aller- gic to these insects so kecp some antihistamine on hand. Everyone likes to walk their dog, not have the dog, walk them. Heeling means the dog is fol- lowing the Icft leg, so start hecl- ing on the Ieft foot. On the halt, stop on the right foot, bringing up the left foot to the right, so the dog can see the halt. Have your left hand on the lead as if you were shaking hands. The command "Heel" is preceded by the dog's name "Jasper Heel" as you step off on the Ieft foot. Move briskly, talk to the dog all the time you are practising, encourage him to keep up with you or stay back with you. With larger dogs, the dog's shoulder is in line with your leg and with the smaller dogs, the head is in line with your leg. The dog's head or shoulder should never be more than 3 - 4 inches from your Icg. Do not pull on Icad or have any pressure on the Icad. The dog is always on a loose Icad. The corrections are a quick snap, jerk or "pop" on the Icad, then imme- diate loose lead again. Always praise the dog after a correction and watch your dog's ears, eyes and tail to sce how he is respond- ing to his lessons. Some tentative activities for the 1st Annual Pajama Party include a dunk tank, corn roast, tug-o-war, home run derby and base run. There's a 12 team limit so register early at the recreation office. Deadline for registrations is May 31st. Mixed Slowpitch The Mixed Slowpitch League is in full swing with games being played each Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Community Ball Field. Sixteen teams are again registered. Stop by the ball field and catch the action. Please note that the ball park concession is now open every evening for your convenience. Ladies Slowpitch The Ladies League will get underway on Tuesday, May 30th. Anyone interested in playing should contact the recreation office or Cathy Lengyel as soon as possible. Minor Ball Program All players will be notified on May 29th of their coaches, teams and playing times. This year we are trying something different with the minor ball program. We will run the ball program until the end of school and then switch to soccer. It is too difficult to run minor ball with everyone taking holi- days and such after school is out. If you register for minor ball you will automatically be registered for the soccer program. We are still in need of coaches and umpires for both programs. Remember only those teams with coaches will run. If you are inter- ested in helping out please con- tact the recreation office at 824- 2317. NOTICE OF PUBLIC INFORMATION SESSIONS TIMBER MANAGEMENT PLANS The Ministry of Natural Resources and Kimberly-Clark of Canada Limited are pleased to invite any interested persons to participate in the Information Sessions for the Timber Management Plans for the Longlac and Nakina Forests and the Geraldton Management Unit.
