Teaching your dog to come By Alice Scott Obedience training is the foun- dation for a well behaved dog. Very often "Come" is one of the most difficult exercises, for with- out us realizing we may have cre- ated a bad impression from puppy hood. We perhaps called him to point out his mistakes and very often the dog associates "Come" with something unpleasant. So - time to back track. Make games out of "Come". A - tidbit occasionally just to intrigue him into thinking "Come" is something great. Even if he takes 3rd Annual Beavers Garage Sale April 22nd 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. at the Scout Hall Donations appreciated 825-3820 In Memoriam In loving memory of a dear sister Betty who passed away April 10, 1988 No one knows How much we miss you No one knows the bitter pain we have suffered Since we lost you Life has never been the same. If you go and g him that is another story, but ev: then we should keep our tempe in check. Start when your pup is arour two months old. Start calling h name and then come immediate. after, always say his name first | get his attention. "Fido Come will usually bring them running. Remember to praise your pu with lots of enthusiasm. Offi him a treat at the same time th you praise him. Gradually cut down on th treats but still use praise. Tone « voice is very important, a do will come much easier to a plea: ant happy tone. Using a gruff « sharp tone will only frighten you pup or older dog. When your pup is coming 1 you inside the house it is time | graduate outdoors, but only on leash. Put your dog in an area awa from you when his attention is o something else; call him and ; the same time gradually pull i excess leash. Do not pull too har and give your dog a second t respond to your call. Never k your dog off the leash until yo are confident he will "Come".
