Schreiber library has good new books The Bill Russell concert, fund- ed by Outreach Ontario, Program of the Ministry of Culture and Communications, was held February 28 at 10:00 a.m.. in the Schreiber Public School gymnasi- um to a very receptive audience of JK to Grade 4 students and their teachers from Schreiber Public and Holy Angel's Schools, as well as parents and children wishing to attend. He started the program with fun with string going into singing with audience participation. The Ontario Heritage Week "Boxes Old and New Contest' deadline for entries is March 3. Bring your oldest, smallest, most unusual boxes into the library and view the entries, also the hat col- lection. The Crankee Consort Group will present 'Chopped Up Tales,' a musical puppet play suitable for ages 7 and up, at the Lake Superior High School Schreiber Campus Wednesday, March 15 at 1:00 p.m. Admission is $1.00 per person. This program is funded by the Ontario Arts Council. The Schreiber Public Library has recently purchased a maga- zine display rack, new shelving, a computer for cataloguing the col- lection, a steel book truck for story hour supplies, a transtand for the projector and reels with a grant received from the Ministry of Culture and Communications. The theme for this year's Summer Reading Program is "EUREKA." Watch for further announcements on this program. Story Hour at the Library, Wednesday from .2:00.-.3;:00: p.m. for 3 - 5 year olds, and Saturday from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. for 6 - 10 year olds is an interest- ing and learning experience for the children. As well as listening to stories they enjoy finger plays, singing and crafts. Amber Pennyfeather, Interim Assistant Librarian, coordinates Wednesday Story Hour and Suzanne Currie the Saturday group. The winner of the book on Dinosaurs for the "Guess the number of pages in the book" contest held in conjunction with the Schreiber Winter Carnival was Wendy Morrison. The children's concert present- ed Saturday, Feb. 18 with Jennifer Garrett was thoroughly enjoyed by the children. Miss Garret is a musician and singer and a workshop on children's music was held in the morning for adults. The Creative Music Circus Manual which she devel- oped in conjunction with Confederation College was used at the workshop. Singer, Rodney Brown, will be presenting a concert in the Library Saturday, March 18. Watch for further news of this. Donaldson; Return to Eden, Harry Harrison; The Story of Stone,Barry Hughart. See you at the library! Meeting poorly attended The General Meeting held February 27,1989 was very poor- ly attended. Adelaide Beaulieu presented the newly elected S. Love with her President's Pin. Birthday Party at Birchwood Terrace were hostesses on February on February 16 with a Penny Auction which was enjoyed by all. Mary Graham, knitting con- venor has a good selection of wool available for Auxiliary knit- O.P.P. News Schreiber O.P.P responded to 49 occurrences during what is usually know as "a slow month" for Police.Assaults and domestic disturbances were on the rise as people begin to get "cabin fever." There were two impaired drivers taken off the streets and two 12 hour suspensions given, 64 Highway Traffic Act charges were laid, along with numerous other charges. On the 28th of February at approximately 0830 hours a colli- sion occurred on C.P. Rail line on the east end of Schreiber yard causing damage to a chlorine tanker. All detachment personnel were on alert in case of an emer- gency. Fortunately the tanker was removed without leakage. Residents are reminded to use caution when backing out of lane ways and parking lots. It is always advisable to back into a driveway so that you can exit the drive easier. Please take a second look for snowmobiles on the roadway when turing or pulling out of private driveways or streets and continue to drive slowly! Schreiber Rec News Aerobics We will be losing our instructor at the end of this session. Anyone interested in teaching aerobics should contact the recreation office as soon as possible. We will train anyone who is interested in becom- ing a qualified instructor. National Coaching Certification Program 1989 has been designated as "Year of the Coach". The Schreiber recreation department has tentative- ly scheduled a Level 1 Theory Clinic for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 14th, 15th and 16th. This course is designed to give the beginner coach an inside look at the philosophy of coaching and the impacta coach has on his or her athlete. The ultimate objective of the Level 1 Theory program is to give the coach a tool with which to design a practice. Some of the top- ics discussed at this level are plan- ning, role of the coach, growth and development, sport safety, skill analysis, skill development and physical preparation. The theory portion of the NCCP is designed for all sports and is applicable to all coaches. If you are interested in taking this course please contact the recreation office at 824-2317. NCCP Level II Theory The recreation department has tentatively scheduled a Level 11 Theory Clinic for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 21st, 22nd and 23rd, the second weekend of the course will be held April 28th, 29th and 30th. The Level II program is designed to take the practice plan developed in the Level I course and expanding on it to make a yearly or seasonal practice plan. Topics to be discussed and expanded upon include planning, role of the coach, growth and development, sport safety and physical preparation. There is a limit of 15 people per class so register early by contacting the recreation office. Soccer The recreation department is interested in organizing a minor soccer program this spring. We will need coaches and officials. We will conduct a referee's clinic and an introduction to soccer program with the assistance of the Ontario Soccer Association. Anyone inter- ested in coaching or officiating are asked to contact the recreation Office. Gymnastics The. gymnastics program has tentatively been scheduled to begin the week of April 24th. Before the program begins we will be holding a public meeting to discuss the organization of the club, setting up of times and the various age groups. We will be conducting this public meeting as soon as we have obtained the available hours for the gymnasium. Watch future issues of the Rec News for the date of the meeting. Elaine Mannisto presented a very interesting video on "Life Line" after the meeting while the ladies enjoyed coffee. Plans are well underway for our Birthday Party to be held April 7. Auxiliary members will be contacted by their team captain as to who will attend. We must know by March 24 in order to inform the caterer. Shirley Caron and Carolyn McLeod are striving to rnake this event entertaining and fun for all. Next General Meeting will be March 27 at 8:00 p.m. Please try to attend.
