Page 8 TERRACE BAY/SCHREIBER NEWS. Wednesday, February 22, 1989 Pet Lalk By Alice Scott The single most popular reason to get a cat is for the companion- ship it provides. Cats are ideal companions since they love to be stroked and are highly affectionate. Prospective owners must catfe- fully and honestly consider whether they and the other members of their household are truly prepared for the extra work and effort that necessar- ily comes with a cat. It must be fed once or twice a day and kept in good. health. If you have children they must be taught not to chase, shout at, tease or hurt a kitten or cat. If they are not yet old enough to understand this then you should postpone having a cat until they are older. Also check to make sure there is no one with allergies to cats in your household. Once you decide to get a cat you are still left with the question of what sort of cat to get. Will it be a kitten or full grown animal? A male or female? Long-haired or short? Purebred or mixed breed? If a purebred, which one? There are many to choose from. If your cat is just to love as a pet, and you have no intentions of breeding, then the perfect place to find one is at the Thunder Bay Animal Shelter. You can always call them and leave your name and number if you desire a cat of a cer- tain colour or age. The papers quite often have ads giving away kittens or cats. No matter what sex you prefer, they should be neutered or spayed. Males that are not neutered have a tendency to roam and fight with other males. Males can also SCENES for sale at WHITE SAND LAKE BIRCH MAGIC ; PHOTOGRAPHY | Spend some time in the country and experience the ageless beauty of the North Shore of Lake Superior captured for you by S. Male cats tend to be larger than females and are friendly, lively and vigorous. Spayed females are sometimes more cautious, gentle and quiet. I have owned both male and female cats and find they make excellent pets. Make sure when you look at a kitten that its eyes are clear, there is no sneezing, coughing, wheezing or debris around the lips or mouth. Check for signs of diarrhea around the cat's tail. Examine the inside of the cat's ears to make sure they are clean and free of wax or soil-like material. There are exceptions but white cats with blue eyes are often deaf. To check the hearing call to it when it is turned away. Have your cat checked by a veterinarian and have it vaccinated. An indoor cat is much easier to care for and they have fewer health problems than an outdoor cat. If you're interested in a purebred cat then visit your local library and read a couple of books on the types and temperament that are available. Contact a Vet since they are usu- ally acquainted with the local breeders or can give you the Canadian Cat Associations address. Next week: What's a dog show? Northern Developments fas \7 By Maurice Fenelon Northern Development Officer Those familiar words often appear on post cards sent by resi- dents of Northern Ontario who take tropical vacations to escape ol' Jack Frost and the inevitable Cabin Fever. But, before you pack your bags and step aboard that south bound jet there are a number of arrangements that must be made. After choosing a destination you will have to arrange for travel and accommodation. Choosing, a travel agent who will be able to best meet your needs is no easy task. A good rule of thumb is to stick with rep- utable well established firms. To protect the financial interests of Ontario travellers and' ensure ethi- cal conduct and good travel ser- vice, the Ontario Travel Industry Act requires the registration of travel agents and wholesalers. Consumers should know that they 'have no protection when dealing with American firms. Be very cau- tious of companies offering free trips to Florida. Such offers are usually scams. Comparison' shop various pack- ages and deals offered by different travel agents and be sure to ask about their cancellation policies: It is also a good idea to ask the travel agent what they know about your destination. Now that you know where you are going check -to see if you will require a Passport and/or travel visa. Your travel agent should be able to advise you if these docu- ments are required. Passports should be ordered about three months before your trip begins. If you should require a travel visa contact the embassy of the country you wish to visit for information and assistance. The Canadian Citizenship Photo card is a valuable piece of identification which could prove very useful should your Passport become lost or stolen while on your trip. These cards can be obtained from your local office of the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines. Medical insurance coverage while travelling outside of Canada is a must, especially for those who are going away for an extended period of time. Travellers should know that medical costs outside Canada can be very expensive and OHIP may not provide you with total coverage. For this reason obtaining medical insurance is a good idea. You should also ask your travel agent if immunization shots are needed before leaving. If these shots are required the local medical clinic or Health Unit can advise who administers the shots. LAST SECOND Should you be travelling to a country for the first time it is a good idea to learn something about the areas you will bé Visiting? There are many useful books written for travellers. They provide much use- ful information for tourists such as do's and don'ts for foreigners and tips on dressing, dining, and the weather. If you should require further information on obtaining passports, travel agent information or related information call or visit the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines, 2 Stevens Avenue, Marathon, Ontario - 229-1153.
