Wednesday, February 15, 1989 TERRACE BAY/SCHREIBER NEWS Sibley Ski Tour expected to attract over 700 participants 12th year for popular ski tour By Dave Chmara The 12th Annual Sibley Ski Tour takes place at picturesque Sibley Provincial Park Saturday, March 4, 1989. The Tour, originally called the Thunder Bay Ski Tour, began in - 1977 and has grown in size so that it now attracts over 700 participants for the day long event. Sibley Provincial Park is located 45 km east of Thunder Bay and the tour is held to salute the superb ski- ing to celebrate the coming of spring, Participants can take part in the event which best suits their individ- ual ability - routes of 10, 20, 40 and 50 km are available. The 10 km tour is designated as a family fun ski, the 20 km and 40 km are strictly tours where partici- pants do not compete for placings (although they will have their times recorded) and the 50 km race is the ultimate challenge with several awards going to the top finishers. Organizers note that it is the responsibility of skiers in the 20,40 and 50 km events to make sure that their bibs are properly marked by the check-point volunteers. The trails are groomed for both diagonal striding and skate skiing and are usually in top condition, despite warming trends experi- enced in late February. The entry fee includes a lapel pin for finishing, decal, transporta- tion from the finish back to the start area, checkpoint stations (refresh- ments, repairs, wax, snacks, smiles) future newsletters, souvenir bib number, first aid services (complete with an extensive communications network), official results book, and refreshments at the finish area. _ The 20, 40, and 50 km events start at Pass Lake and end at Rita Lake. The 10 km family fun ski starts and ends at Rita Lake. ~ The 20, 40, and 50 km tours have a mass start which begins at 9:00 a.m.-and skiers are advised to arrive early enough to allow for the parking of vehicles, the waxing of skis and the pre-tour warmup. Start time for the 10 km event is 12 noon. More information is avail- able in the newsletter and Tour Kit about the start area and route. The Tour Kit can be picked up March 2 or 3rd at the Red Oak Inn from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. In conjunction with the kit pick-up, a free waxing clinic will be held at the Red Oak Inn on Friday, March 3 at 7:00 p.m. After the Ski Tour, a social will be held at the Red Oak Inn. The bar service will open at 6:00 p.m. with a "beef on a bun" dinner being served at 6:30 p.m. Awards presentations will take place after dinner. Cost for the evening is $10. All skiers completing their cho- sen distance will receive a lapel pin indicating their accomplishment. The age classes for men and women are: - 19 and under - 20 to 24 - 25 to 29 - 30 to 34 - 35 to 39 - 40 to 44 - 45 to 49 - 50 to 54° - 55 to 59 - 60 to 64 - 64 and over Ages. are based on the partici- pants age on Tour day. Awards include: 1. Oldest and youngest skier award - An award will be given to the oldest and youngest skiers com- pleting the 20, 40, and 50 km events. . 2. Fastest Skiers-Award - An award will be given to the three fastest male and female finishers in' the SO km event. 3. Family Distance Award - An award given to the family unit which skis the most kilometres. For the purpose of the Sibley Ski Tour, a family unit consists of at least three members of an immediate family, ie. the children, parents and grandparents in one family, 4. Family Touring Award - An award given to the family unit with at least three members who have the fastest average time per kilome- tre skied. A minimum of 130 km must be skied by the family. 5. Woodymakeit Award - Awarded to the first skier who. completes the 50 km event on wood skis. Team Awards (only kilometres skied in the 20, 40, and 5O km events) 1. Half-Way Motors Sibley Award - given to the local team which skis the most kilometres. 2. Bill Smilsky Visitors Awards - given to the team from greater than 50 miles away from Thunder Bay which skis the most kilome- tres. 3. School Award - given to the school (elementary or high school) which skis the most kilometres. New awards to the Sibley Ski Tour are the Keg Mystery Time Team Award. A group of four peo- ple skiing the 20 km route will be eligible to win a $150 party at The Keg Restaurant. The mystery time will be drawn on Saturday night at the awards social. The team with the combined skiing time closest to the mystery time will win the award and at least one team mem- 'ber must be present at the awards social and submit an entry form with the total time of the team. As well, a Diagonal Striding Award will be offered in order to recognize the efforts of diagonal striders. In the event of unsuitable condi- tions, the Tour will be held Sunday, March 5, 1989. The course records for the 50 km event are: Male - Tim Aro, Duluth, Minnesota - 2:38:18 (1988) Female - Tarja Ala-Korpi, Thunder Bay - 3:20:54 (1988) Entry fees for the Tour are: 10 km Family Fun Ski - $10 ($5 for children 16 years and under). 20 km - $18 ($9 for children 1166 years and under). 40 and 50 km - $34 (after Feb. 18 - $26 before Feb. 17).
