THURSA ALLEN THOMPSON Executrix by her solicitors ZAITZEFF - CANCADE Barristers and Solicitors P.O. Box 3536 233 S. Court Street Thunder Bay, Ontario P7B 6E2 Robert Runciman, Progressive Conservative critic for the Solicitor General, has called on his fellow MPPs to express support for police officers across the province for "the effective job they do for us on a daily basis and for the performance of their duties in a conscientious manner in the interest of protecting the public." The following is Runciman's statement to the legislative assem- bly. Mr. Speaker, Police Officers in Ontario have been getting a lot of negative press recently in regard to shootings of private citizens which have resulted in charges being laid against some officers. I agree that such charges should. be laid when evidence supports those charges, however, given all of the negative press recently, I want to remind members that these officers are innocent until proven guilty. I find it extremely disappointing that rarely do members of this house rise to commend our police forces for the effective job they do for us on a daily basis, that they perform their duties in a conscien- tious manner in the interest of pro- tecting the public. Mr. Speaker, within the last few weeks a police officer was killed in the line of duty, the result of a traf- fic accident. Also, a woman police officer had part of her leg amputat- ed after being hit by a car while in the line of duty. However, no one in this house stood up to express con- dolences on the death of the one officer nor did any member stand to address the fact the woman offi- cer's career on the force is now in question because of her leg ampu- tation. Mr. Speaker, it is impcrative that we maintain a balance between stating our concern over question- able actions of our police forces and-our support for their dedication to their duties. Without doubt, police officers are human beings and mistakes will be made. However, we must also recognize that officers are called upon regularly to make split-sec- ond decisions in the interest of enforcing the laws of our province. Mr. Speaker,-I ask you and members of this house to join me in stating support for our police forces and to express to them the respect which they deserve. Players fall all over the ice in a mad scramble for the puck during Terrace Bay No Body Contact hockey action last Friday night between the Hawks and the Bruins. The Hawks won the game by a score of 7-3. Photo by Dave Chmara Minister's response You may wonder if politicians get any response to their questions or concems which they raise in the line of their duty. A couple of weeks ago NDP MPP Gilles Pouliot raised con- cems regarding wood pulp in his . riding. The following is the response from Vince Kerrio, Minister of Natural Resources. Dear Gilles: Thank you for your letter of December 12, 1988 regarding felled timber along the Dorion Cut- Off Road. The Dorion Cut-Off Road is located, for the most part, on the Spruce River Forest, Forest Management Agreement Arca held by the Abitibi Price Inc. There are currently five Third Party operators harvesting timber in addition to an Abitibi Price operation. Niigaani Enterprises Ltd. for example, is based out of Gull Bay and is cur- rently operating under a multi-year agreement in the Obonga Lake area of the Spruce River Forest. ° The Wolf River (Dorion Cut- Off) area, which I understand you travelled recently, supports two Third Party operations MacMillan Bloedel Ltd. (Nipigon Division) who operate for white birch and poplar veneer timer, and Northern Wood Preservers who are harvest- ing primarily for conifer sawlogs. Logging are regeneration opera- tions have been ongoing in this arca for many years .as you are aware. Northern Wood Preservers Ltd. DATED this 8th day of February, 1989. EDWIN W. PAGET Barrister & Solicitor P.O. Box 10 Terrace Bay, Ontario POT 2WO have harvested timber this past sea- son along the road in question. The operation in the Wolf Lake-Venice Lake area has been ongoing for the past two years under a Third Party licence and is proposed to continue in the 1989-90 season. We are aware of wood piled at the junction of the Venice Lake and Wolf River Road junction and also in an area just west of this location. I assume that this is the wood to which you refer in your letter. Buchanan man- agement have indicated that this material was left to be processed in the next year because of a seasonal shift in their logging site. My field staff fully intend to monitor this sit- uation throughout the 1989-90 operating season to make sure all the harvested wood is processed. I urge you to contact Mr. Bill Therriault, District Manager in Thunder Bay should you have any further questions., I am-sure he could arrange a ficld tour of the area in question.
