Vol. 43, No. 6 February 8, 1989 OM2 Log @ e0ee rk 1u9 he 40 cents Cold causes carnival cancellations But indoor events go on as scheduled antanieccoee oho ------------ By Dave Chmara The Schreiber Winter Carnival began last week and what was a full slate of activities was some- what shortened as the cold weather would have made outside activities extremely unpleasant in the -30 C temperatures. : The torch light parade, sched- uled to take place Friday evening, was cancclled as was the men's road hockcy tournament because of the inclement weather. Friday evening, a short ceremo- ny was held outside to crown the senior and junior kings and queens of the carnival. Senior royalty are Jack Handel and Beth Macadam and the junior king and queen are Devin Speziale and Daniclle Cebrario. After the outside crowning, the kings and queens went inside to receive their carnations and pose for pictures by proud parents and friends alike. Some hardy souls, about twenty or so, braved the cold weather to enjoy a bonfire outside the Schreiber Recreation Centre, and suck up what heat they could from the quickly burning Christmas trces. Organizers also had hot choco- late outside to warm up the inside of the spectators. Saturday the Atom's Hockey Tournament got underway and dur- ing the afternoon a children's car- toon festival was held. One lady said the turnout was poor for the cartoon festival as most people on hand were enjoying the hockey games being played at the Recreation Centre. A Lasagna. and cutlets Carnival supper was held Saturday evening and on Sunday the Atom Hockcy Tournament as well as the Ladics Curling Bonspiel continued. This weck, the carnival action continues with a Chimo Club Card Night taking place Thursday evening, and a Sweet Heart Curling Bonspiel taking-place at the Schreiber Curling Club Friday. Those wishing to enter the curl- ing tournament may do so at the Schreiber Legion, Branch 109.
