Schreiber Rec News Gymnastics We are now in a position to offer a gymnastics program in Schreiber and Terrace Bay. The program run out of the high school in Terrace Bay due to storage space of equipment. This program must be organized as a club similar to the one pre- ciously operated when Betty Tate Pineau was coaching. We have two level I coaches certified and a num- ber of ones submitted as partici- pants. We do not however, have enough adults showing an interest in the program. If there are interest- ed persons left from the previous club or new individuals interested in assisting in the organizing of the new club we ask that you contact the Terrace Bay recreation depart- ment at 825-3542 or the Schreiber recreation department at 824-2317. This program cannot operate with- out the interest and work of a large number of volunteers. It is now up to the citizens of Schreiber and Terrace Bay if this program is going to succeed or not. Both recre- ation departments are willing to assist in anyway we can however the program must be offered by a club similar to minor hockey, ringette or figure skating if it is going to succeed. Please call now if you are willing to assist even if in a minor capacity. The children need you, and there are a large number of them. Call now! Mixed Volleyball The adult mixed volleyball pro- gram is in full swing. It is a drop-in type program on Tuesday evenings at the high school gym from 7:00 to 8:15 p.m. Anyone interested in a relaxed evening of physical and social enjoyment in invited to par- ticipate. Please use the east end door by. the ball park and bring run- ning shoes. Downhill & X-country ski reports available The Ontario Ministry of Tourism and Recreation, in cooper- ation with the Ontario Ski Resorts Association, will once again pro- vide daily information on ski con- ditions throughout the province. The alpine and cross-country reports are available 24 hours.a day and provide accurate, detailed information on snow surface condi- tions, weather, lifts, slopes and operating trails. "Skiers can take advantage of tremendous facilities throughout the province, but it's important for them to know what kind of condi- tions they can expect before they use the slopes," Minister of Tourism and Recreation Hugh O'Neil said. "The Ontario Ski Reporting Program provides them with excellent daily information." The alpine information line is (416) 963-2992. The cross-country information line is (416) 963-2911. The taped report is available to the public beginning Dec. 3 at 7 a.m. and is updated daily at 11:15 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. Skiers can receive more detailed information by calling Ontario travel counsellors toll-free at 1- 800-ONTARIO (1-800-668-2746) between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. The same service is available in French by calling 1- 800-268-3736. Skiing continues to be the most noanilar winter recreational activitv Christmas Program Cathy Birch and the recreation department are busy planning a list of activities for the children during the Christmas holidays. The pro- gram will be distributed through the schools. Winter Carnival The schedule for the Winter Carnival is nearing completion. Any group or individual wishing to get involved in the carnival in any way is asked to contact the recre- ation office as soon as possible. This years carnival will be held from Friday, February 3rd to Sunday, February 12. The Winter Carnival can be a very exciting event that helps to pass the long cold Northern winters but only if the citizens wish it. Get involved, plan now to attend or participate in the events. For more information on how you can help call the recre- ation office. NCCP Level I and II Theory Clinics ; We need more registrants for these clinics if they are to be held in our community. The level I clin- ic is scheduled for late January (dates to be decided by majority of registrants); the level II is sched- uled for late February. If you are interested in either of these courses please contact the office as soon as possible. Ladies only Fitness and Weight Training Program If you are interested in joining a "Ladies Only" instructional pro- gram in the new year, then this is the program for you. Louise Boileau will give instruction on before. basic weight training techniques, proper lifting procedures, proper use of all the apparatus, show you how to design a routine to suit your schedule. This will be a general conditioning program (an all over muscle toning workout). This pro- gram will run for 8 weeks com- mencing January 10 and will be held on Tuesday evenings from 8:00 to 9:00 p.m. If you wish more information or wish to register con- tact the recreation office at 824- 2317. Aerobics The next session of "Muscles in Motion" will begin on Tuesday, January 10 and will again be held on Tuesday and Thursday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. at the recreation complex. Registration is limited so register early. Learn to Skate The recreation department is now accepting registrations for the Learn to Skate Program. The ses- sion will commence on Monday, January 9. Two classes are held; one in the morning from 10 to 11 and in the afternoon from 2 to 3 on Monday and Thursday. The chil- dren must be accompanied with an adult and helmets are mandatory.
