Page 10, News, Wednesday, November 23, 1988 Is your chimney safe? What to do NOW Now is the time for that annual chimney check-up. Before the fall and winter seasons set in, inspect your chimney, particularly if your heating system is oil, natural gas or propane, With these fuels, your furnace does not stay running long enough to keep the chimney continuously hot. That's when condensation of the water in the 'smoke' can occur and why you see so many chim- neys with mortar and brick deterio- rating, and liners crumbling. This moisture can also blister the paint on the wall covering the chimney. Energy conservation efforts which have tightened up many houses, reduced furnace firing rates in many cases, and lowered ther- mostat setting have also resulted in chimney deterioration. Cold air is more dense than warm air. As air cools, it can form a column of heavy air in the chim- ney. When your furnace starts up, it tries to drive this air up the chim- ney. Sometimes it is not successful, and the products of combustion spill back into the furnace room. Such spillage can also occur if there is a blockage in the chimney caused by rubble, a dead bird or small animal, or even a bird's nest. If the products of combustion end up recirculating through the burner, they could become lethal. You can detect spillage from an oil furnace by smell, or from a gas fur- nace when there is a high degree of moisture spilling from the draft hod, or if there are signs of paint SCENES for sale at WHITE SAND LAKE BIRCH MAGIC PHOTOGRAPHY | Spend some time in the country and experience the ageless beauty of the North Shore of Lake Superior captured for you by S. Make sure your chimney is Clear of obstruction by holding mir- ror inside the inspection or clean out the opening at the bottom of the chimney to ensure there daylight at the top. Loose or crumbling masonry can be detected by a visual inspec- tion. Call in a specialist if you think there is a problem. Your oil suppli- er or gas utility may be able to pro- vide an inspection service, or sug- gest someone who can. It is important that homeowners check 'their chimneys at regular intervals. Poorly maintained chim- neys and heating systems can lead to tragic accidents, such as carbon monoxide poisoning. $y EVERYTHING Wage Needed for (@S, INDOOR iS, GROWING Hydroponic Hydroculture Products Grow Beds, Culture Pots, Nutrients Lights, Tracks, Pumps.
