Local pet owners have many responsibilities Alice Scott has been involved with animals since early child- hood. She was the one who brought home every stray cat or dog... and who cried when her parents wouldn't let her keep them. For the past seven years, while living in Montreal and Schreiber, she has been showing, breeding, and training dogs. She Started conducting obedience classes last year and has received excellent response. . 'T'm currently studying for a Vet Assistant Diploma as well. I feel there is a need for people in this area to receive better infor- mation on basic pet health care," She said. Alice belongs to the Canadian Kennel Club, the Labrador Owners' Club, and the Labrador Retriever Club of Canada. Her column Pet Talk will dis- cuss relevant issues related to the care.of animals and helpful tips for their owners. By Alice Scott In my first column, I'd like to touch on three subjects: loose dogs; spaying and neutering; and the humane way to euthanise your pet. I am sure most people in Terrace Bay, Schreiber and Rossport are tired of hearing about the dog-on-the-loose situa- tion, but as a long-time lover of . animals I feel it should be top pri- ority. Not only is it a danger to the animal, but it is also a nuisance to Pet Talk the public as well. People must understand that dogs are pack ani- mals. Yes, they have been domes- ticated, but when left loose their wild instincts can take over espe- cially when two or more are together. Every day across the U.S. and Canada, people and pets are attacked and sometimes seriously injured by loose dogs. This is not the animals's fault; it is the own- ers' who don't take time to build a dog run or tie their animals securely. My own dogs, who are all obedience trained, are never off lead in town. This also helps to keep the area clean. I'm sure you too are tired of stepping on surprises left around by dogs whose owners don't scoop up after their animals. It is a very good way to make an enemy of your neighbours, espe- cially if they don't have a pet. Stray cats are a problem as well. I've been spending time every week picking up garbage spread from one end of the yard to the other. Lots of cats don't need to go out and are better off in a home. Many children pick up worms from playing in a sandbox - frequented by cats. Over the years I've heard many excuses for not spaying or neutering a pet. "I'd like the chil- dren to experience Nature," is one reasoning. Well, rent a movie; kids get bored with little puppies or kittens in about two days. "I haven't got time to go to the Vet," is another excuse. If you don't have time or money for a trip to Thunder Bay or to visit the Vet when he's here, then you don't have the time for a pet. These are just a few excuses; already, I have people coming to me trying to find homes for unwanted animals. The last topic of this column deals with the humane way to euthanize your pet. A dog or cat that has been in your family for many years deserves to die to humane way. I remember when my two 13- year-old cats had become so ill that it was painful for them just to Stay alive. It took me weeks to make the decision to have them euthanized, and it still hurts to this day. _I was really surprised to about unwanted animals being shot. This is not a humane way of euth- anizing any animal. If there is no alternative, such as a severely injured dog or cat, I understand that the two-hour trip would cause them more pain. However, if it's something you have time to think about, please make the trip or wait until the veterinarians make their visit (0 your community, No maj Continued from page 1 ¢ A Visitors' Centre which will serve as a nucleus for all park activities and programs.
