Society calls for improvements Local hearing impaired lack services The Canadian Hearing Society of Thunder Bay has completed research concerning the needs of hearing impaired people outside the city of Thunder Bay from the Manitoba border to; White River. The overall finding of the Study is that hearing impaired people are doing without because no services exist regionally. The study identifies 1568 hearing impaired people of all ages living outside the city of Thunder Bay. The needs of these people vary. Many require basic audiologi- cal services to enable them to purchase a hearing aid and need medical services from an 'ear, nose, and throat', Specialist. They also require up-to-date informa- tion concerning hearing loss and devices available to assist the hearing impaired. Few native people receive any service for hearing impairment and they are at high risk of hear- ing loss due to a higher incidence of middle ear infection. The Canadian Hearing Society would like to establish regionally- based services to meet some of the needs of hearing impaired people and advocate for the development of appropriate medi- cal services to met the needs identified. A total of 130 hearing impaired people or their represen- tatives participated in the study, and 109 organizations that have contact with hearing impaired residents were interviewed. The report shows that 9 orga- nizations and 13 individuals were interviewed in the Schreiber/ Terrace Bay area.
