Page 8, News, Wednesday, July 13, 1988 anada Day Ce By Freda Boucher Terrace Bay's week-long Canada Day Celebrations were a huge success, and those who stayed in town did not go home disap- pointed. The celebrations started on Saturday, June 25, at the Terrace Bay Arena with a Children's Bike Rodeo. Gary Callaghan and Dave Smeltzer ran this event and they were pleased with the response. The winners of this event will be announced in next week's issue. The dance held at the Moose Lodge on Saturday evening went very well. The band was excellent and a good time was had by all. The only event held on Sunday was a Teen Triathlon. Seven con- testants signed up (all males) for this event, and organizer Chris Joubert felt that this was quite a successful venture for being a first- time effort. Hopefully, next year we will see more children out for this contest of athletic skills. The win- ners of the the Teen Triathlon are: 1st: Dallas Davis 2nd: Chris Cashmore 3rd: Ryan Singleton The Swimming Pool Family Swim Events were quite successful as approximately 80 children par- ticipated in several events both in and out of the pool. Everyone had a great time, and according to Recreation Coordinator Dean Main, "It was a typical day!" The Second Annual Baby Pageant was held at the Terrace Bay Legion Hall with the Senior citizens once again doing the jud- ing. Approximately 40 babies were fitted in their diapers and entered into the contest. The Princess was Coral Pelto, and the Prince was Bradley Hara. The Free Children's movie, "The Fox and the Hound" spon- sored by the Towne Cinema, was a howling success. According to Eliana Gordon, it was the biggest crowd ever to attend a matinee, She was very pleased that everything went so well ,and she is looking forward to participating in next year's Canada Day celebrations. There was a good response to the Teen Dance held at the Terrace Bay Arena with approximately 100 teens kicking up their heels. Music for the evening was provided by the Stereo Club. 11 '5A Gir] Mr. & Mrs. Dennis Niittynen are proud to announce the birth of their second daughter MIRANDA ASHLEY MARIE on Wednesday, June 29, 1988 Weight 8lbs. 4 oz. An event that was revived from years past was a Children's Bike and Costume con- test. Many children entered this, and all were delightful as well as help- ful. Moms and dads put a lot of effort into their childrens' costumes and bike decorating. The judges had quite a time choosing the win- ers of this event. Although the parade. was a bit smaller than usual due to last minute cancellations, the enthusi- _asm of the crowd more than made up for this. The floats that were entered wer artistically done. The parade started behind Birchwood Terrace, went along Kenogami Road and up to Simcoe Plaza where Councillor Chris Joubert greeted the crowd and pre- sented the Citizen of the Year Award to Frank Sechesky and the Youth award to Helen Jones. Reeve Ramsay gave a small speech and the Fraser Girls Pipe band put on a demonstration. As usual, the Beer Gardens was successful as well as the fun events put on by the Tot Lot for the chil- dren, Many thanks to Karen Teniuk for coming to the rescue at the last minute to provide music for the Beer Gardens and the Bonfire. The fireworks were set off after dark, and put on a dazzling and sparkling end to Canada's birthday. Saturday began with a bedrace at Simcoe Plaza, and although the day was cool, it probably was not cool enough for those who had the task of pushing the beds. Winners were: 1st: B.J.'s Beach Boys 2nd: The Brady Bunch 3rd: Lions Club Tailenders: the township Saturday morning was also the big Sidewalk sale with most of the local merchants participating. There were free baloons, cupcakes, and ice cream handed out to hun- gry folkks along the route. It was a great selling job for the mechants and businesses of the town. Apparently, Costa's went through 11 drums of ice cream during the sidewalk sale! The Kiddie Carnival held. at the arena was well-attended with "Magician" David Bannerstone stealing the show. Several visitors came from Marathon especially to see the A&W Rootbear. Councillor Chris Joubert was the lucky person chosen to be "'sponged," and Chick Thompson spent more time in the dunk tank than out of it. Unfortunately, there was a minor problem with the dunk tank, and it is supposed to be in repair for next year. The July 1 Dance held on July 2 had a good tum out. Everything went smoothly and the crowd of over 350 had a very good time. _ The helicopter rides were a huge success and the pilots were busy giving tours for both Friday and Saturday.
