The 52 million kilograms of zinc and 1.6 million kilograms of copper concentrate projected to leave the on-site mill this year will be shipped via CP rail to the province of Quebec for smelting. The zinc will be hauled to Ballyfield and the copper will be sent to Noranda. After all is said and done, a price of 34-35 cents US per pound for the primary product, zinc, will be needed to break even. According to Bill Brosko, a sur- vey technologist at the mine, the richness of the ore body will help to pay the bills. He said tests done have indicated the ore body to be comprised of up to 40 per cent zinc, and he called this deposit the richest in North America. Of the 1,000 tons per day to be milled, approximately 400 tons will be recovered as concentrate. One of the more advanced pieces of technology being used in the mill are Larox dewater filters. Made in Finland, the system is hoped to pro- vide better efficiency during the milling process. The minerals are separated by flotation and the concentrate is trucked to a CP transfer facility in Schreiber before being loaded into CP rail cars for the trip to the smelters. Elements from the streamlined work board to the complete com- puterization of every department in the mine reflect the new concept in fully automated and efficient min- ing. Another innovative addition is an electric manway. The 1600 ver- tical ft. manway can haul up six men at a time, and was designed to complement the usual system of ladders and ramps. The manway shack houses a small hoist afid back-up diesel engine in the event electricity is lost. Environmental concerns are apperently a priority as well. An on-site environmentalist attends to the effluent of the mill and oversees the recycling of water. Brosko said the company is concemed about the fish stocks in Lake Superior because of the mine's close proximity to it A dam retains water and allows for leech- ing, and a water treatment plant recycles drinkable water. The mine employed 120 people at the beginning of March, and Dickson hopes to increase. the num- ber to-140 by a couple of months. If someone would like to be hired, he or she must be prepared to become staff; there are no unions in the mine. Minnova anticipates between nine and ten years of productivity at its Winston Lake Division mine, and they are currently undertaking further exploration . The economic impact on Schreiber has been hard to gauge so far, but Minnova is generally viewed as a positive economic addition to CP. Dual-name certificates to those changing name upon marriage Consumer Minister William Wrye today announced that people "electing" to legally change their name upon marriage will receive a dual-name birth certificate, contain- ing both their original birth name and their new surname. The new certificate should be available by the summer. Ontario's Change of Name Act has been in effect for just over a year. Mr. Wrye also announced that his ministry would carry out a review of the legislation to deter- mine whether any further modifica- tion would be required. Under the current practice, fol- lowing election to change one's name, the birth certificate is revised to show only the new surname. The act provides that upon mar- riage, if any person wishes to for- mally change their name in law and have a revised birth certificate to prove it (if born in Ontario), they may elect to do so through the Change of Name Act. Change-of-name forms as well as English and French brochures outlining the provisions of the Act are available from the Office of the Registrar General, Macdonald Block, Queen's Park, Toronto, Ontario M7A 1Y5. Forms to change a surname under the elec- tion provision may also be obtained from issuers of marriage licences.
