Dear John: My neighbor says I should "thin" my garden after germination. I say the more seed- lings, the better my chances for a good crop. Dear Mary Quite Contrary: In this case, too many seedlings can spoil the soup--or the vegetables that go into the soup. Yanking healthy seedlings out of the garden May go against your grain, but it's necessary to pro- duce a healthy final crop. Crowd- ed seedlings grow into miserable, leggy, unproductive plants. After germination, thin the seed- lings to half their proper mature plant spacing. (Ask your local nursery for a vegetable garden planting and spacing guide). When the seedlings are 5 em tall, thin them to final spacing. Some crops--like spinach and beet greens--are most tender when they're young, so think of the thinning as a "mini-harvest", Dear John: Last year I fertil- ized my lawnall summer long and it still didn't get very green. What could the problem be? Dear Forever Feeding: Sounds like your lawn could be suffering from a case of overfeeding. If you fertilized your lawn all summer long, and didn't water thoroughly after each application, your grass probably developed "fertilizer burn", which destroys green grass plants. An overfertilized lawn also provides the perfect environment for fungus disease. To keep your lawn thick and healthy this sum- mer, fertilize only twice--once in the spring and again in the fall. And make sure to follow label directions carefully. Dear John: What safety fea- tures should I look for when buying a lawnmower? ees Dear Smart Shopper: On riding equipment--lawn and garden trac- tors, riding mowers and lawn tractors--look for a triple-safety Starting system which is designed to help prevent accidental Starts. Gardeners Think Thin Look for a switch that will dis- engage the power take-off or stop the engine if you leave the tractor seat while the mower blades are under power. Walk-behind safety features include a control lever on the handlebar that Stops the mower blade within three seconds after it's released. With a flywheel brake system, the mower engine automatically shuts off when the lever is released. Another system has a blade brake clutch (BBC), which also stops the cutter blade within three seconds, but the engine keeps running. On all mowers, look for a mower deck that's equipped with a downward-curving shield on the discharge chute to deflect thrown objects. A rear-mounted bagger can help, too, when it covers the discharge opening, providing pro- tection against thrown objects.
