Page 2, News, Wednesday, April 13, 1988 Another bit of a bite from Helene By Helene Ballard I would like to hand out some well-deserved thanks at this time: To our very able cook and his staff for a delicious Easter Sunday dinner. As usual the food was well- prepared and served by our dining room girls. Sometimes I wonder how they can always be so cheerful; it sure helps brighten our. days. A big Thank you to the ladies Auxiliary from the community church for their easter place deco- rations. They never fail to please us, and they do this for us for each big holiday of the year. I think even if we are "ole Folks" there is still enough kid in us to look for these treats. On behalf of our residents, I thank you. On Easter Sunday, one of our nurses, Debbie McGrath, came in to wish us a Happy Easter. She had her two sweet little girls with her and they brought a beautiful Easter cake, which we all enjoyed with our afternoon coffee. Even Father Campbell had a taste. Taking a Bite while driving Now I hate to spoil this "bit," but I have a "bite." It seems some of our young people and some not-so-young are again using our front driveway to turn around. Last week, a gray and black pick-up was heading west, and then Some hilarious questions from some hilarious people By Anne Todesco During the years my husband Charles and I ran a general store in the village of Rossport, we met so many tourists. Some would ask such foolish and amusing questions that we decided to keep a record of some of them. We filled a scribbler, and here are a few examples: 1. Sir, how far do we have to drive before we see a polar bear? 2. Could you tell us where the best skiing slopes. are and how much further do we-have to drive? (Their car was loaded down with ski equipment and warm clothing). 3. Is Ontario far from here? 4. A farmer from Illinois drove up one day and had purchased some gas. He drove a lovely big Cadillac car and wore bib overalls. He said to my husband: "Just look out there. Isn't that a beautiful scene? There isn't a prettier lake than Lake Michigan." My husband informed him that he was looking at LAKE SUPERI- OR in Canada. The poor fellow thought that he was. still in the USA. 5. A New Orleans high school teacher. asked if my daughter -- who was sitting at the table -- was doing her homework. I answered that she was. The teacher asked her what she BIRTH ANNOJJNCEMENT Mike and Debbie Brady of Espanola Ontario are happy to announce the birth of their daughter ANNA MARGARET, february 21,1988. A sister for Jessie. The teacher couldn't believe that Canadians made such an extensive study about her country. She said they believed that we are covered with snow and ice and ski year-round. 6. We employed a young Metis lad in the store. He was of Indian and French origin. Some tourists who were in the store kept staring at the three of us until, finally, one lady couldn't resist asking: "Are you all Indians, as I notice that your son is so much darker than you two?" Well, that sure made us chuckle and caused us to laugh for a few minutes. Then Charles told them that I was and auburn Scotch- Canadian, he was a fair northern Italian and and the boy was part Indian and was known as a Metis Indian because of his background, which was French, Indian and Norwegian. 7. Do you people mostly live on wild meat and fish? That should be enough for a good laugh! the driver changed his mind and used our driveway to turn around to head east. When the truck passed near our front entrance, it was really travel- ling -- pieces of ice and sand fly- ing around. With the coming of nice weath- er, more of our residents will be going out to walk around. If there had been someone in the driveway, they could not get out of the way in time and there would have been trouble. So please stop doing this because some day I'll get lucky and get the licence number. I have men- tioned this-many times in my col- umn but with poor results. All we can do is hope that whoever you are you will stop and think about this. We are no longer kids, so we can't get out of the way in a sec- ond; think about it. "Thank you."
