Page 9, News, Wednesday, April 13, 1988 Dear John: John Deere Answers Your Lawn and Garden Woes Dear John: I'm a marathon runner who likes to establish an early lead. Is there a way to get a fast start on flower gardening? Dear Spring Sprinter: This time, you might want to walk before you run. Late winter months sometimes bring the kind of weather that makes gardeners itch to get outside. But just as you need to warm up before running, your soil needs to warm up before it's ready to go the distance. If you work the soil prematurely, when it's still wet or cold, it can get so compacted that air and water won't circulate properly. This can result in permanent damage to the soil structure. You can't grow fast flowers on a slow track. To determine if your soil is ready for a workout, pick up a handful and squeeze it into a ball. If you can squeeze water from the soil, it's too wet. If it crumbles like chocolate cake, it's ready for til- ling and planting early varieties. Dear John: We're landscaping our yard. Do you have any tips that will make mowing easier after we finish? Dear Plant Manager: If you decide to plant trees or shrubs near a building or fence, be sure to leave enough space for easy mowing when the plants mature. Also, avoid landscape touches that force you to pull a walk-behind *.VanLines _ . Division of sees UNITED. WYNrTED WonireD _asia, Bay City Moving =" and Storage mower backward, or drive a trac- tor in reverse. You can see better mowing forward. As you put in new plants, use extra soil to fill in holes around the lawn. If a slope is too steep to mow comfortably, replace it with a decorative groundcover. Dear John: Should my lawn- mower get a spring cleaning before the mowing season begins? Dear Mr. Clean: Although it's best to give your mower a thor- ough cleaning at the end of the mowing season, it's also a good idea to clean the mower deck and clear away clippings after every use. Give your mower a thorough spring cleaning by using a soft rag to remove grass and debris from between the cooling fins around the engine. Then wipe down the engine and the housing with a clean dry rag. If the mower is badly coated with oil and dirt, wash it with hot, soapy water, hose it off and let it-air dry. To wash the underside, pull off the spark plug wire and tip the mower to the side. Then hose off any debris and let the mower air dry before cutting the grass. To. stop grass clippings from sticking in the future, try coating the underside of your mower deck with a silicon paste wax or a lubricating spray.
