A letter from the committee in-- Improved Services for the Hearing Impaired In order to better serve hearing impaired adults and children, the Canadian Hearing Society in Thunder Bay is studying the ser- vice needs of hearing impaired individuals. The study is being conducted in several regional communities. Members of the study team were in Terrace Bay on Feb. 23. To ensure that any new pro- gram developed reflects the needs of hearing impaired, representa- tives of the hearing society spoke with individuals and agencies who have concerns about the availability of local services. Wayne Kushnier, from. the Youth Employment Centre (YEC) in the: Nipigon/Red Rock area, approached council on Feb. 22 to see if there is interest here for the Futures program. This program focusses on youth between the ages of 16 and 25 who have been out of a job and school for some time. The Futures program teaches youth how to find jobs, how to write resumes and how to act in an interview, to name a few of the ser- vices. Youth in the Futures program are placed in the workplace for 16 weeks where they become trained in that particular job. The govern- ment pays their wages- the mini- mum wage of $4.55 an hour. Kushnier told council. the Nipigon/Red Rock Futures pro- gram has between a 90 and 100 per cent success rate- that is, about 95 per cent of the youth find employ- ment after being in the program. The Nipigon/Red Rock Futures is the most successful in the province at this time. Clerk Dave Fulton asked Kushnier when he would need an answer regarding whether the township would participate. Kushnier replied by saying he would like to have the program in place by summer, even as soon as possible. He said that if the township did decide to participate, $10,000 would be a good amount to put into the program. The Ministry of Skills Development matches township funds up to $10,000. .
