I do believe that our celebration needs to be for the right reasons. Therefore I have some questions. It concerns me when I realize the lack of thought that people give towards the reason to be jolly. Is Christmas just another opportunity to party? Why not be honest and just party to escape the realities of the day and forget about trying to make out that the celebration has anything to do with Christ. What does alcohol have to do with significant Christmas celebration? Jesus was born to deliver his people from their sin- the abuse of alcohol just seems to lead people deeper into it. Jesus came to give us the opportunity to live life in its fullest sense- there are enough seasonal fatalities for us to realize that alcohol does not lead us in the right direction. The origins of gift giving are certainly from the biblical tradition but excess has once again lead us astray. That expensive gifts are somehow meant to make up for the neglect of relationships during the rest of the year raises concern in my mind. There are a lot of people who end up paying off debts from Christmas giving with payments that last until next Christmas. The crass commercialism somehow takes away from the real significance of Christmas. It is much more important to give a gift that truly expresses love and gratitude. Religious tradition is another reason that I'm not impressed with today's style of Christmas. Christmas is really a celebration of the birth of Jesus. Why did he come and what did he teach? His basic challenge was to leave behind our insistent desire to please ourselves and to follow God's way. One writer says to die to oneself and follow Christ daily. What does a once-a -year church appearance have to do with daily following the Master. I believe in the Christmas celebration. We need to think about why and how we celebrate. Please be honest; most of our modern Christmases are not real- ly honouring the birth of Christ but just another excuse for a party. Let's party for the right reasons- He was born to give us life. Life that is worth living forever. Winnie Campbell By Winnie Campbell Our deepest sympathy to Mrs. W. Murphy and family on the death of Walter Murphy; many friends and relations attended the funeral at the Holy Angels Church. Get well wishes to Mrs. Rae Tuomi and Mr. Dydich and Lil Christie and Charlie Pearson. Mrs. Kathleen (Kay) Gellert retired as manager of the Bank of Montreal in Schreiber on Friday, November 27, 1987, after work- ing there for 21 years. An open house was held at the bank and a reception was held in the Legion hall. Kay started with the bank as a ; teller in 1966 she also was the lia- bility clerk, assistant and personal loans officer and became manag- er in July 1985. The first woman manager, Kay says she noted changes over the years she has spent in banking as when she started the manager was always a man. Deposits at this branch are 12 times more than when she started in 1966. We do serve more people but they are also making more money. This branch, which moved into their present building in 1972, has been fully-computerized since 1980. Kay and: her husband Harold, who retired one and-a-half years ago after working for the CPR, raised a family of four. Their oldest son lives in Montreal and Kim in Italy (hock- ey player). Daughter Donna is in Calgary. Kay says now she can go and visit her family. Mrs. Colleen' Fischer has eight years of banking experience and she succeeds Kay as manager of the Schreiber branch of the Bank of Montreal.
