If approved Gash said if the study. is approved, it will then go to the board of management for consid- eration in November, and a deci- sion will be reached by the end of the year. If it is approved , it will go to the municipalities for their approval. ' Then it must go-to the Ministry of Community and Social Services for approval. Gash said these three groups just mentioned have been involved in the study from the Start. Schreiber Recreation Community Calendar If the minstry approves the plan, Gash said it will then be a question of where the project stands in the ministry's major capital work plan and when fund- ing would be available. He said if the plan is approved, the next step would not take place until late 1989 or early 1990. __ They key here is what priority the plan has with the Ministry of Community and Social Services and when funding would become available. Met with workers Gash met with employees of Birchwood Terrace last week to allay their fears and quell rumours about just what is going n. "Residents should have been packed a week ago" was one rumour Gash had heard was going around. ° Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, November 4, 1987, page 7 Board's master plan complete by November Birchwood. Terrace presently employs 11 full-time and 31 part- time workers. The people work in areas such as maintenance, activities, dietary, nursing, housekeeping, laundry and administration. The staff of Birchwood could easily handle a full home, but as stated before, 38 residents live there now. Gash said if the plan goes through, these workers will still be needed in the new homes. For example, workers will get to choose through seniority whether they would want to stay in Terrace Bay or move to one of the towns that will have the new units. Many considerations Gash told The News the new homes will be built, for one, with the residences' privacy in mind. Also, wheelchair accessibility is a major factor. Gash said the 'inde- pendence of the residents is very important. The News asked Gash if it was possible to keep the units for the seniors in Birchwood as opposed to building a new place in Terrace Bay. He responded by saying that if that was done, the seniors would be playing a secondary role in their own home. Renovations that would be necessary in that instance would also be too costly, he said. Birchwood would still have to be brought up to current stan- dards. Gash made a point of saying the study has not yet been approved. "The results of the investiga- tion will support the concept" of de-centralizing, he said. A new weekly column is presently being planned by the recreation department and the News staff.
