By Ken Lusk The News Terrace Bay Police Chief Don Kidder has informed Terrace Bay Council about his concern that boats are once again having diffi- culty getting out of the river mouth at the Terrace Bay beach. Because Kidder's jurisdiction extends out into Lake Superior, he is concermed it is blocked. The Terrace Bay Police might have difficulty getting out into the lake in case of an emergency. The river mouth was blocked before last June and an agree- ment was reached between the Ministry of Natural Resources and Ontario Hydro to flush out the build-up at the river mouth. Low water levels New MNR District Manager for Terrace Bay Ron Running told the News that nothing can be done about the river mouth at the present time. He said the main reason is because of the very low water levels of the inland lakes and rivers in the area this year (from Northeastern Ontario all the way to the Manitoba border). Running said that Ontario Hydro, when water levels are nor- mal, can divert some of its water capacity from Hays Lake through the river mouth to rid it of the build-up (this was done last June). Running said because of the low water levels right now, Ontario Hydro regrets they cannot assist with a flushing out; they just cannot afford the water nec- essary to do the job. Back Hoe job MNR District Manager Running told' the News that a local resident, Roy Teniuk, sug- gested to the MNR that a back Economic development discussed from page 1 for economic development (ideas)," said Joubert. "It's for council, not a town- ship employee. It's not the way to go." Clerk-Treasurer Dave Fulton said it is not his or Mitchell's intention to tell council what to do. We can give council advice and recommendations, he said. "T didn't plan to sit on the com- mittee (economic development)," Mitchell told Joubert. "I would like to see this addressed formally sometime," said Counc. Houston. He believes subjects of this magnitude should be discussed before council meetings so that everyone is in agreement about when and where it should be dis- cussed. (More from Mitchell .in this issue). hoe could possibly clear out the build-up at the river mouth. It was a good idea, but unfor- tunately it didn't work because the machine kept getting stuck in the soft sand. The message that Running would like to get across is that there are many demands placed on our water system, namely Kimberly-Clark, Hydro and the Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, November 4, 1987, page 5 River mouth blocked by sand township. The trick here is to keep every- one happy. Everyone needs the water for different reasons and a balance between them must be made. Three-way discussion Running said Hydro, the MNR, and township representa- tives will soon get: together to dis- cuss future water management so problems like this do not happen on a regular basis in the future. The discussions and the solu- tion will most-likely tie-in with the township's waterfront devel- opment project. Running says the river mouth will be flushed out in the spring. He said no one is the bad guy in this situation. "It's Mother Nature." 824-2599 MONDAY-SATURDAY 9:00 - 5:30 P.M.
