As a result I was kicked off to the nearest Sunday School and spent several years being instructed in what they believed were the ways of God. Luckily, most of it did not stick or cre- ate any kind of lasting impression. If it had, I'm sure my sense of self-worth would be extremely low because we were expected to measure up to some pretty high standards. We were exposed to people who were considered to be "Heroes of the Bible". I. grew up on stories of Daniel in the Lion's Den and David the Giant Killer and other similar folk. They were held up to me as good exam- ples of people I could try to be like. Well, it is a bit much to ask a-kid who is afraid of the neighbour's dog to be like some 'character. who spends the night hanging around in a pit with a gang of hungry JTONS: It is a bit much to ask a kid to be like young David when he has had two fights with a smaller boy and lost them both. The message I began to get was not that these heroes were people that I could' be like but rather that I was a wimp who couldn't do these wonderful things. David and Daniel and the rest had noth- ing to say to me about my life and so. lI faded from the religious scene. Many years later I re-read these sto- ries and discovered another side to these- heroes that I had not been told about. They were wimps too! Mighty David, so upright and true, got all excited over somebody's wife, sent him off to get killed and moved in'with the lady! Moses, who led the people of Israel to the promised land, put up such a fuss when God called him that God lost his temper. He didn't want to go and came up with a dozen reasons as to why someone else would be a better choice. Solomon the Wise had 700 wives and 300 concubines! This*is wise?: The: heroes, 1t turns out, weren't always such heroes after all. They messed up on a fairly regular basis....just like me. I came to realize that this is the mes- sage.
