Page 6, Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, October 14, 1987 Opposition toboard's decision continued from page 1 contends the move is necessary to ensure better board operations. All administrative board meet- ings are held in Marathon. The board says moving the offices to Marathon will rid the staff of the need to travel so often. Subsidize housing Another contention the coun- cils have is that the board plans to pay upper-level employees $20,000 to assist them in moving from Schreiber and Terrace Bay to Marathon. This money, said Terrace Bay REUNION NOTICE: Former students of 3A Neelon Public School, now Adamsdale Public School, First Avenue, Sudbury are invited to contact the Reunion Committee '88 by calling (705) 566-9947 or by writing to: Neelon School Reunion Committee "35 Manchester Crescent Sudbury, Ontario, P3A 5H4 NOTICE own rules of procedure.. Another contention opposers of the move have is that the whole plan was carried out with- out public input. Better serve The Lake Superior Board of Education held a meeting in Terrace Bay at the high school on September 22 and this is where much debate took place on the matter. Representation from both town councils included Schreiber Reeve Mike Cosgrove and Schreiber Councillors Bob Krause and Ed Borutski. Reeve Ollie Chapman and Councillors Jim Ziegler and Chris Joubert were present from Terrace before October 09, 1987. W.L. Mitchell Deputy Clerk-Treasurer Township of Terrace Bay P.O. Box 40 Terrace Bay, Ontario POT 2WO should apply in writing to the Municipal Office on or Bay. At the meeting, board Chairperson Pat Richardson said the plan to move the offices was presented to the full board and it was agreed it should be done. She said one reason the move was decided upon was because the board's jurisdiction is so large- 120 miles- that travelling has become a definite minus for the employees. Richardson said the move will better ensure the operation of the board- travelling poses many problems (i.e. weather), she said. The travelling also necessitates employees to work many hours above normal. The fact that the administra- tive staff has to transfer all docu- ments to Marathon for the meet- ings poses significant problems she said. The board calls this "working out of a suitcase". Lake Superior board Business Administrator Bruce Rosseau said the time spent travelling by the staff is "time spent not doing their jobs; they are not fresh (for the job)." Reeve concerned Schreiber Reeve Mike Cosgrove is not happy about the move and addressed the board by saying that back in 1969 the board was given free rental in Schreiber for their operations. He said that because of a heavy volume of business the board has with mini Queen's Park in Thunder Bay, Schreiber Township offered to expand the board's exsiting facilities at this time at no cost to the board. The rent would have still been free, he said. Cosgrove asked the board at the meeting why it has not under- taken an impact study to look at the pros and cons of the move. He asked why the board did not consider an alternate site in Schreiber or Terrace Bay for the offices, Cosgrove said the estimated payroll loss to the area due to the move would be in the area of $450,000 with an additional loss of between $60-70,000 to the business community. He questioned the board's poli- cy of subsidizing the employees' move with the selling of houses that were originally purchased with taxpayers' money. Cosgrove asked the board to sympathize with him and others- we don't want to lose the offices he said. Not true Chairperson Richardson took exception to the fact what Cosgrove said about the board not appreciating Schreiber Towship's treatment. "It's not true," she said about being unappreciative. Richardson said that an alter- nate site was not looked at in this area and also that an impact study was not done. The problems of travel for the August of 1988 is the move date trustees should be considered (by opposers of the move)-she said- "the cost on (their) personal lives; the loss of personal time." The board has a $5,000,000 budget to operate with, she said, and staff is doing their job out of the back seat of a car. "It is not appropriate," said Richardson. Some people in the system have to travel four hours, she added. The board pays adminis- trative staff very well. To pay them to drive is not an efficient way to get return for the dollar, said stated. "It is to the best advantage of the kids that the board office be in the centre of the system." This board important Terrace Bay Councillor Chris Joubert made note to Richardson that the move will result in the offices being 60 miles further from Thunder Bay (and mini Queen's Park). Richardson responded by say- ing Thunder Bay is important but the first priority is the administer- ing of the school board. "It makes more sense to be in the centre (of the system)," she said.
