Z 9 GQ Oupu's Ba Leadman \ Ge7¢ Is in Barnard Pri eames bead fee a: ap J ner stot ox ll Christians' responsibility to government Submitted by Rev. Jim Johnson, pastor, Grace Baptist Church, Schreiber Willing obedience- One obligation of a Christian to his government is submission, for he must recognize that its authority comes from God (see Romans 13:1). No person has a right to claim exemption from this 'Divine mandate, and in the Scriptures we find both the extent of this submission and the manner in which it is to be rendered. The Extent of Obedience- the Christian is to obey every regulation of his government unless it would cause him to disobey the Lord. For example, a believer is not to obey the State if it commands him to lie, steal, or perform immoral or cruel deeds. Many early Christians steadfastly refused to offer a pinch of incense to Caesar as an act of worhship, even when their lives were threatened. Whenever one must choose between the will of God as revealed in the Bible and the demands of a government, he must say with the apostle Peter, "We ought to obey God rather than men" (Acts 5:29). This single exception to the call for submission, however, does not open the door to the kinds of disobedience often seen today. No Christian has the right to reject a demand of his government just because he doesn't agree with it. He may think a certain form of taxation is unjust, and be firmly convinced that the money paid in taxes is being spent foolishly. But this does not free him from the obligation to "render, therefore, to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom" (Romans 131). , In addition, we are to obey all rulers, whether heads of empires or leaders of smaller units in government. We have no right to disobey someone just because he is a minor official. The Manner of Obedience- The Bible also tells us that we are to submit to authority in a cheerful and respectful spirit. A believer may consider a law unfair, and he is free to speak out against it on that basis. But as long as it is on the books, he must obey it. Even when he objects, he should be respectful to those who are in authority. Paul said, "...fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour" (Romans 13:7) Peter advised that we should look upon our obedience to the government as an act of service to the Lord. He said we should submit."for the Lord's sake." To unleash bitter tirades against rulers is not in keeping with the will of God as revealed in the New Testament. Neither is the use of derogatory or insulting terms when speaking of prime ministers, premiers or law officers. Mrs. Muriel Dubeau from Lac Minerals is visiting the Needhams. Mr. and Mrs. Sinclair (nee Ruth Bolan) from Victoria are visitors at Bolans. Also, many relations to attend the funeral of Pat Bolan.
