Prince's record of competition is impressive: Regional Games for the Physically Disabled, Windsor, June 5, 6 and 7, 1987; Provincial Games, North York, July 16-18, 1987; First National Games, Windsor, July 23-26, of the games Prince has competed in. Shawn is so good at his chosen categories of competition- 400- metre, 800-metre and 1,500-metre runs, javelin and shotput- that his parents Susan and Ben told the News Shawn could be chosen as the next Athlete of the World for the running categories in CP Competition. The World Champion, Robert Mearns, is presently the Athlete of the World. Mearns told Shawn that he (Shawn) is further along athlet- cially than he himself was at the The Princes will soon know if | Shawn will qualify for the World Olympics as part of the Canadian National Team for 1988. Ben said that if Shawn doesn't make it this year, he is confident Shawn will make it for 1989. This, said Ben, "is some great recognition." Shawn's father Ben, who. works for the Ministry of Natural Resources in Terrace Bay, said that Cerebral Palsy, the illness affecting his son, is the illness that most disabled persons have. He said that although Shawn was born with CP, he has always been competitive. He said Shawn first became introduced to disabled sports through George Jeffrey and the Children's Treatment Centre in Thunder Bay. Since the summer of 1984, when the Princes lived in Kirkland Lake, has Shawn been interested in athletic competition. "He did so well there," said Ben, "we could see that it gave him a great lift....'Gee,' we realized, 'he's really good.' " Gave up lunch Shawn has played sports in school- on track teams and on volleyball teams. "He used to give up his lunch hour to prac- tise," said Ben. He has excelled so well that most of the time he places first in every event he enters. According to Ben, Shawn is the second or third-fastest in the world in his category. What Shawn has succeeded in doing is "a nice start," said Ben. "We encourage him to continue." Shawn is a Class 7 competitor- that is, he is rated on a scale of one to eight- one being disabled see page 16 1987; that is only naming a few same age.
