By Ken Lusk © An article in a Thunder Bay magazine (Thunder Bay Magazine), which focusses on a circle tour of Lake Superior, has certain people in Terrace Bay up- in-arms because of a certain description of this terraced town, and I quote, "Our disappoint- ments were Terrace Bay, where . we knew Kimberly-Clarke had been spewing its killing excre - ment into the Lake for more than thirty-five years,...." The article mentions three other disappointments in other places which we won't mention. Reeve upset Terrace Bay Reeve Ollie Chapman brought this subject up at the council meeting on July 13 in response to the Aguasabon Chamber of Commerce's feeling that this presents a bad image of Terrace Bay. Aguasabon Chamber of Commerce President Michael Moore wrote a letter to the writer of this article to inform her that this remark only shows a lack of investigation about other North Shore communities. Following is that letter reprint- ed with permission: "Dear Ms. Shelton; I read, with much interest, your article 'Circle Tour', in the June/July issue of the Thunder Bay Magazine. Of particular interest was your disappointment in the 'GEM OF THE NORTH SHORE' Terrace Bay. "It is unfortunate that you did not research how pulp mills in Marathon, Red Rock and Thunder Bay handle their effluent prob- lems. You would have found that effluent from the Kimberly-Clark mill in Terrace Bay, has been dis- charged into Mobezley Bay, only after it has passed through many miles of settling ponds and lagoons, as opposed to other mills, which do not have such a system. "This does not imply that Kimberly-Clark does not pollute. It simply means that when com- pared to other mills in the area, Kimberly-Clark's performance rares well by Ministry of Environment statistics. "If you insist on tarring the image of Kimberly-Clark and Terrace Bay, then please be con- sistent and tar the other mills and municipalities. "The Aguasabon Chamber of Commerce and the Township of Terrace Bay are working very diligently in developing Tourism to lessen the dependence on sin- gle industry. The task is made that much greater, when articles such as yours appear. "Please, on your next tour around Lake Superior, spend some time, and get to know why we truly, and proudly are known as the "GEM OF THE NORTH SHORE. Yours respectfully, Michael Moore, PRESIDENT." Be in touch Reeve Ollie Chapman told the News that she intends to contact the writer of this article and ask her why she didn't look into the subject a little more before writ- ing the "damaging remark" The reeve and council are in accordance with the contents of Moore's letter to the writer, Chapman said.
