Page 2, Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, December 17, 1986 Christmas message from Father Bill LeGrand "In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness,-and the darkness has not overcome it."' As a child I hated Darkness. Around our old house in Parpeblac, Quebec, I imagined all sorts of creatures in the night: ghosts, goblins, witches, tigers... you name it and that '*something" was there. Our local Anglican parish always celebrated a Midnight Eucharist which I enjoyed... for the profusion of candles suddenly lighting up the darkness of a quiet, sombre Church. Except for the time when I almost set my sister's hair on fire, the candles of Christmas meant a lot to me. Of course our kindly old priest, Fr. Porter, a High Churchman of the fine order, made this night spring alive for us. '*Recreation" In a melodic chant he would sing of Christ's entrance into our world. Incar- nation, which I never really understood until I hit Seminary, often sounded like "*recreation". I spent ten years of my early life wondering why Fr. Porter wanted us to have "recreation" for Jesus' birthday. While incarnation was a nebulous word for me, I could understand the light. As at Easter, it meant Jesus was present. senior, was not unconvince I was about to embark on a life of being paromaniac. But, that's another story... (she still doesn't trust me with candles for some obscure reason). Jesus, you see, became known to me in my childlike way, as the guy who lighted my way around Darkness. Upon retrospect, I now realize I was being theological, even when I couln't pronounce the strange word. This awesome creator of our entire cosmos touched the hearts of men and women with the light of His entrance into our world, as a gurgling little bun- dle of humanity. : Sometimes, we Christians become sentimental about Christmas. Unlike Jesus Christ, we leave our faith with that little bundle of Mary's joy. We darken our Church doors to be brought into the light of Christ at Christmas and Easter, but return to the darkness of our private and in- dividualized Faith. Can't ration Faith Often people tell me, "'Bill, I'm a Christian. I believe in Jesus Christ. I live a good life, never hurting anybody. I don't need to go to Church."'
