A news release from the Ontario Block Parent Board of Directors noted that over one million people across the country are now particip- ) ating in the safety and crime preven- 'tion program. The local chapter "started up earlier this year. "*Be One In A Million" is the na- tional theme for Block Parent Week this year, the release added. Al- though originally formed to help pre- vent child molestings and abductions, the Block Parent program has grown and expanded since that inception in London, Ontario in 1968. Today in over 550 Ontario com- munities, residents of over 100,000 homes are Block Parents. Across Canada, the familiar red and white sign is displayed in the windows of more than 300,000 homes, designat- ing them as places of temporary safe- ty and protection for anyone needing the help a Block. Parent can and will provide. Terrace Bay Police Chief Russ Phillips said this week that he is hap- py with the local Block Parent chapter but added that some of them must be reminded to remove the Block Parent sign from their window when nobody is at home at the time. "'The signs are supposed to mean . that there is somebody there at home," Chief Phillips added. For more information about the program contact Chief Phillips at 825-3232. No smoking motion defeated by Council continued from page I with some drivers taking their machines past Birchwood Terrace and McCausland Hospital late at night. "*T don't see how buying a snow- machine will help with this,'" Ram- say replied. "We've been through this four times this year," Joubert said. "I want to put this out for tender now." She then called for a vote on the mo- tion, which approved authorization to purchase such a vehicle. A recorded vote was also called for. Voting for the motion were Rom- anuk, Joubert, and Ziegler. Voting against it were Reeve Chapman and Ramsay. The motion was therefore carried by a three to two majority vote. Later at the meeting, Ziegler gave his recreation report and said a short list of four candidates out of a total of almost 50 applications has been prepared for the Township Recrea- tion Co-ordinator job. The previous Co-ordinator, Terry Bryson, recent- ly submitted his resignation, which was accepted with 'regret at the meeting. Ziegler added that interviews with the four finalists will begin on Oct. 24. Bryson's successor will probably be hired before the end of the year. A letter from the Schreiber office of the Thunder Bay District Health Unit was also read at the meeting. Public Health Nurse Brenda Asmussen said in the Oct. 3 letter that '*there seems to be some misunder- standing" regarding the CNIB's Eye Care Unit's recent visit to the area. She pointed out that the service is sponsored by the Kinsmen Clubs of Schreiber and Terrace Bay. and the Health Unit's involvement consists of taking appointments and scheduling only. At a previous meeting, some members of Council complained that | they were unaware of the Eye Care Unit's visit, which took place earlier this month. "In addition, this office placed two block ads in the Terrace Bay-Schreib- er News...informing the public of the dates, the location of the van, and where to call for dn appointment; which the Kinsmen Clubs pay for,"" she added. Council instructed clerk-treasurer Larry Simons to send a letter in response. The letter was to explain that any comments Council made at the Sept. 22 meeting which were reported in the News were based on Council's lack of information about the CNIB unit. Simons noted that he had called the Health Unit office about the problem, though the press was not aware of his follow-up and was only able to report the original Council discussion. .
