Disabled eligible People with disabilities who have made significant contributions either to the community or to the province as a whole are now eligible for Com- munity Action Awards from the pro- vincial government, the Minister Responsible for Disabled Persons, Tony Ruprecht, has announced. In a lettet to Lake Nipigon MPP Gilles Pouliot, the Minister said the new awards program will be ad- ministered by the Secretariat for Disabled Persons and will be open to all Ontario residents who have a disability. '*Although there are no specific categories, acheivements in such fields as the arts, business, politics, education, music, sports or communi- ty organization are possible ex- amples," Ruprechet explained. There will be a total of five awards in the program this year. He asked for people to nominate someone who they feel would qualify for such an award. Nomination forms are available from the Secretary of the Selection Committee care of the Secretariat for Disable Persons at 700 Bay Street, 3rd Floor, Toronto, On- tario, MSG 1Z6. The deadline for receipt of nominations is Oct. 31. "Winners will be notified in November,"' the-Minister said. An awards ceremony will be held for the winners in Toronto this December. Request Cochrane-Superior MP Keith Pen- ner has called for the Chief Electoral Office in Ottawa to consider includ- ing its recent brochure regarding the proposed redistribution of some On- tario federal ridings in some weekly newspapers rather than concentrate on the area daily papers. - In a letter to Jean-Marc Hamel, the Chief Electoral Officer, Penner noted that the brochure was only sent to two daily papers in Penner's riding. "Both papers are English-language and serve limited areas of the rid- ing," Penner pointed out. The papers in question were the Daily Press of Timmins and the Thunder Bay Times News. "I am concerned that my con- stituents will not be adequately in- formed regarding the proposed changes," Penner added. The Terrace Bay area MP suggest- ed that the information packages should be included in the weekly papers of the riding instead. That would ensure that a larger number of constituents would be informed of the proposed riding changes, he said. The matter was originally brought to his attention by Le Nord, a French- language weekly located in Hearst. 'Upon request, my office would be pleased to provide you with a list of the weekly papers in the constit- uency of Cochrane-Superior," he concluded. A copy of the letter, writ- ten last month, was sent to the News recently.
