By Conrad Felber As Director of Support Services for McCausland Hospital in Terrace Bay, Marg Phillips is ultimately responsible for just about everything that comes into the building, with the exception of the patients themselves. One of her primary jobs is the pur- chasing department, which takes care of everything bought for the hospital. She is also in charge of CSR (Cen- tral Supply), the laundry, housekeep- ing, the hospital storeroom, and the dietary department. Phillips started at the hospital part- time in 1963 when it was still owned by Kimberly-Clark. Then, when it became a public hospital in 1971, she took on the role of dietary aid. In 1980, the year the new McCaus- land Hospital opened, she earned a Hospital Management Certificate through a Canadian Hospital Assoc- iation correspondence course. Then earlier this year she was promoted from Director of Housekeeping to Director of Support Services. Since then, she has become familiar with her various depart- ments which cover a wide variety of tasks for the facility. "'In the laundry, for example, we clean everything that is used in the hospital," she explained in an inter- view last week. Surgical instruments are sterilized in CSR, while the housekeeping department keeps the rest of the building clean, from the floors to the ceiling. As for the dietary department, she said the hospital cafeteria prepares food for all patients during the day, as well as for guests and meetings in the hospital. "T think this is the best fed hospital around,"' Phillips said, praising the work of the four local cooks on staff and the Food Service Supervisor, Jennifer Gatz. Last month Phillips began to attend a Telemedicine Applied Management Skill Development course being held at McCausland until December. She said learning a little bit extra 'tnever hurts."'
