The MPP also pointed out that the proposed training facility will help to upgrade the skills of those employed and seeking employmnet at the mines and pulp mills along the North Shore, such as the Kerr Addison-Zenmac Zinc mine now under construction near Schreiber and the Kimberly- Clark pulp mill in Terrace Bay. '"'The tax dollars that are con- A swingin' time tributing to the provincial treasury as a result of this industrial activity will more than justify your Ministry's in- volvement in this cooperative effort,"' Pouliot said, adding that he is hop- ing for a positive and early response. Pouliot notes problems Lake Nipigon MPP Gilles Pouliot has sent a letter to a Director of the Liquor Licence Board of Ontario on behalf of several group organizers in the North Shore area who have com- plained to him about their difficulty in obtaining liquor permits for special functions. "'The complaints appear to be that in order to obtain a liquor licence when organizing a social event, there appears to be an ever-increasing bureaucracy in the rules of procedure to obtain a licence," the Terrace Bay- Schreiber area MPP said in his letter to Doug Rolling, the Board's Direc- tor of Special Occasion Permits. Pouliot reminded Rolling that peo- ple living in remote northern Ontario communities do not enjoy access to the variety of social activities that people in the southern areas take for granted. "Consequently, community organ- ized events are a vital part of the social culture and provide friends with an opportunity to get together in a relaxed social environment," Poul- iot added. He said in the Sept. 26 letter that he realizes that certain criteria must be adhered to when sponsoring a social activity where alcohol is in- volved. '*(So) I would request that you ex- amine the present system of issuing permits and give some consideration to simplifying the application forms," Pouliot suggested, noting that "'the individuals who have approached me concerning this matter are conscien- tious, responsible citizens who have no intention of abusing alcohol dis- tribution at their social functions."' Pouliot concluded the letter, a copy of which was sent to the News this week, by telling Rolling that "any- thing you can suggest that will alleviate some of the stress associated with sponsoring community events will be very much appreciated."'
