A resolution passed at the meeting urged the On- tario Ministry of Education to make a strong commit- ment to primary education and reduce class sizes in the earliest school years. The group's campaign to reduce class size is based on research showing that smaller classes are par- ticularly beneficial in the early grades. - The Federation repres- ents the 32,000 women Still On Soccer fever is sweeping through Terrace Bay's youth. The Recreation Centre's minor soccer pro- gram has enjoyed great success in it opening weeks. We have more than 70 boys and girls registered but there is always room for one more. Presently in the five to eight year old division, Blue Thunder is leading with a record of four wins and no losses, while in the nine to 14 year old divi- sion, the Blue Socs lead by one point. Delegates at the annual meeting also heard that school nurses are doing less and classroom teachers and other school staff are doing more to care for the physical needs of children as a result of budget cuts in the public health sector. The teachers voted to lobby the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of employees at its Terrace Bay pulp mill and woodlands operations. Since then, a number of workers have decided to take the company's retirement package. Education to make sure that adequate health serv- ices are provided in the schools. Well, we sure can feel fall in the air. Before we know, it will be Thanksgiving, and so time flies. Not too much doing here at Birchwood Terrace. Of course, the big news is the lay-offs at the mill. There is no doubt this will be quite a change for many of the town citizens, but we all knew since May that something like this would happen. We can only hope things will pick up at the mill so that more drastic measures will not have to be taken. To those of you whose services have been termin- ated, our wish for you is good luck in finding new employment. without too many hardships. For those of you who may be leaving Terrace Bay, may we say we will miss you, but please know you take our good wishes with you, and may this ole girl say Vaya Con Dios...Go with God. At this time, I would like to say a word about the young students who have been working for the sum- mer here at Birchwood. Chris and his helpers have done very good work: re- pairing, painting, and keeping the grounds in such wonderful condition. To the young ladies who also have been working, taking the residents out shopping or for walks and playing cards with them, to you young people our thanks and our best wishes for a successful school year. Went to Thunder Bay last Wednesday and I went to see Blanche Speck at St. Joseph Hospital. She ask- ed me to thank those of you who have sent her get well cards.
