Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, August 20, 1986, page 3 Mixed Slo-Pitch Tournament called a big success By Jim Nickleson "'Fun In The Fog,"' as it was so aptly called, was the slogan given to the First Annual Mixed Slow Pitch Tournament organized by the North Shore Selects Hockey Team held on the August 9 weekend in Terr- ace Bay. A total of 12 teams were entered in the tournament, with teams coming from as 'ar away as Red Rock and Atikokan. What was unique about this event was its theme, noted Ben Prince, tourn- ament chairman. 'We wanted to put some of the fun back into base- ball and take a little edge off the competitive nature of our participants," Mr. Prince said. This feeling was echoed by Maria Lap- enski, a member of the Ghostbusters team from Terrace Bay. 'It was such a well organized tournament, and with no prize money avail- able, everybody seemed to relax and just enjoy them- selves,'" she said. The tourney, which took place on August 8, 9, and 10 at the Texaco and high Orders sent continued from page 1 fended by the state of dis- repair?" former area MPP Jack Stokes asked. '*'The fact that. we are here to- night testifies that we are dissatisfied...I think it's time to test the by-law."' During Council's disc- ussions of the matter later on, Councillor Ed Borutski insisted that steps be taken to enforce the by-law now. Council then reached an agreement to send letters to those town residents who are currently disobeying the by-law. '"'What they'll be gett- ing, really, is an order (to) clean up," Gauthier said. Under By-Law 758, res- idents are required to keep their yards clear and free from rubbish or other deb- ris and from objects or con- ditions that might create a health, fire, or accident hazard. The by-law also specif- ies that heavy undergrowth or noxious plants shall be eliminated from the yard in conformity with the Weed Control Act. "'Any vehicle, including a trailer, which is in a wrecked, discarded, dis- mantled, or abandoned condition shall not be park- ed, stored, or left ina yard, unless it is necessary for the operation of a business enterprise lawfully situated on the property," the by- law adds. The petition, dated July 31, pointed out a number of properties which are presently breaking the by- law, and added "we also know of other property and iwellings that aren't resp- -ctful."' The 'B' event was won by the Heinz 57s team from Schreiber while the Ghostbusters won the 'C' event. Ken "Tiny" Martinson, ace photographer and team physician for the organiz- ing group, attributed much of the success of the event to the volunteers. "If it had not been for these people, | know we could not have provided such a first-rate tourna- ment,"' he said. Local hero John McGrath was also quick to point out that the tournament sponsor, Lab- atts Breweries, along with businesses from both Terr- ace Bay and Schreiber, came through with financ- ial support and prizes that carried the tourney over the top. Mike Kenny, a member of the Fun in the Fog tour- nament committee, noted that prizes donated by the sponsors went towards de- termining the "'wrong sport award'"' as well as to both winning and losing teams. "It seems that at ball tournaments these days, only the winning teams and the best players receive prizes,' he pointed out. "'We have changed that and feel that anyone should have an opportunity to be a winner whether they win In loving memory of a dear husband, father and grandfather, Gus Krause,' who passed away August 20, 1985.
