In a recent MNR news release, Minister Vincent Kerrio said the licence will be required in 1987 by most Ontario residents ag- ed 18 to 64. Senior citizens and the disabled will be ex- empt, as will Status Indians fishing on their reserves or treaty areas. The release noted that the annual licence will cost $10, while a short-term licence to fish for four con- secutive days will cost $5. Kerrio claimed that at public meetings held across the province, the Ministry received strong support for the new licence. '*People have indicated strong approval for plans to put funding equivalent to revenues generated from this licence--projected to be $9-to-$10 million a year-- into fisheries improvement programs,"' Kerrio said. He pointed out that Ont- ario is among the last of the provinces to introduce a resident angling licence. In addition to the reven- ue, which will be used to improve the quality of sport fishing in Ontario, the licence will also give Min- istry staff important infor- mation about how the res- ource is being used. "It will tell us who is fishing, where and for what. With this informa- tion, we'll be better able to gear our fisheries manage- ment programs to the needs of resource users,'* Kerrio added.
