Page 2, Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, June 18, 1986 Council votes to increase expenses and per diem By Conrad Felber The difference of one cent was enough for Reeve Ollie Chapman to vote against a proposed increase in the mileage and per diem rates for Terrace Bay Councillors, but the June 9 motion passed anyway, with a majority in favour. Councillor Peter Rom- anuk brought the matter to _the table at the Council meeting because he said the existing rates of $30 per day for expenses and 18 cents per kilometre trav- elled have not been increas- ed for six years. "'] propose we increase that to $35 per day and 23 cents per kilometre," he Reeve Chapman had no problem with the $35 per day proposal but balked at the 23 cents suggestion, pointing out that a 22 cent rate had been previously discussed. "'The government is paying up to 30 cents per kilometre for staff travel,"' Romanuk said. Councillor Chris Joubert noted that at Birchwood Terrace, where he works full time, the rate is also 30 cents. "'On the other hand, gas (prices) are coming down somewhat," Joubert said. The motion, which will set the stage for a sub- sequent by-law, was then put to a vote, and all pre- for Reeve Chapman, who wanted to point out her on- ly objection was with the 23 cent rate. Councillor Jim Ziegler was absent from the June 9 meeting. Later in the meeting, Reeve Chapman noted that a town resident was mis- quoted in a recent Thunder Bay Times-News stdry and wanted to let Council know. According to the news story, the resident in- volved said she had been battling with Council on the Terrace Heights sub- division secondary access issue. The woman wanted to let Council know that she realizes Council has ac- wrong impression. "*She phoned and assur- ed me that the story did not (quote) what she had said,"' Reeve Chapman added. Councillor Joubert, later during the meeting, said the town should make a $100 donation to the Chil- dren's Wish Foundation. A fund-raising representative of the Foundation was scheduled to be in Terrace Bay on June 18. The mo- tion was passed. Water lines or the lack thereof was also a topic of discussion at the Council session, thanks to a letter from NorCon Construction of Terrace Bay, which was read at the meeting. said. sent were in favour except ak ee We need CANADIAN SOCIETE your support. sorter _| BRET Cancer can Vv be beaten. t Leieee Birth Announcement Pauline and Bob Woodruff of Schreiber are pleased to an- nounce the arrival of their daughter born May 22, 1986 at Port Arthur General Hospital, weighing 5 pounds, 6 ounces. '*At no time did we co- mmit ourselves to supply- ing water to those lots,"' Romanuk explained. - '*We already have prob- lems with a leaking water line in that area," Joubert pointed out. "No one seems to want to fix it. It's starting to wash away the parking lot at the Moose hall."' '"My understanding was that they knew they would be up there without (a) water supply,' Reeve Chapman said. The area in question is located at the north end of town across the CP Rail tracks. "'There's no way we can es commit taxpayer's money to that," Councillor George Ramsay said. He felt if Council did this for NorCon, there would be many others who would want the same service. The matter, however, was deferred until the return of Doug Baker, the town's engineer, from vacation.
