Page 12, Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, March 26, 1986 Have a slice of the good life at Terrace Bay Bakery The owner of the Terrace Bay Bakery, Czeslawa Jakubowski, beams with pride as she takes freshly baked loaves of bread out of the oven. It was two years ago on April 1 that she bouaht the store from : Fresh bread its previous owner. Since then she had made a few changes, but the store continues to be best known for its homemade bread. By Conrad Felber The date was April 1, two years ago. Czeslawa Jakubowski, who only ar- rived in Canada from her native Poland in 1979, decided to buy the Terrace Bay Bakery from her employer on that day. Two years later, and the bakery is still a great success. Jakubowski and her hus- band Ted came to Canada after she had been a teacher in Poland for 12 years. They first lived in Quebec and then in Mississauga for eight months, only to final- ly arrive in Terrace Bay in July of 1981, where she began to work at the bakery. After eight months, the owner of the shop decided to put it up for sale, and Jakubowski decided to take a chance. Since then she has expanded the bakery's line and has made other ' [It's Truck Time at Tilden with over 20 trucks to choose from / . I'm glad I have it~ The bakery is famous for its homemade bread baked daily with her mixed granola seeds formula, but other baked goods are also available at the Simcoe Plaza store, ranging from donuts to cinnamon rolls made from her mother's secret recipe. '"'We also have two kinds of cookies, chocolate chip and oatmeal with raisins, as well as blueberry muffins, bran muffins, hotdog and ham- burger buns, and hot cross buns," she explained. A couple of months ago, Jakubowski borrowed her grandmother's recipe and started making butter tarts for the store. Baked goods are not the only things the bakery has to offer its loyal customers. Even before she bought the store it was also selling piz- za and fried chicken. The shop also has a cooler which contains milk, soft drinks, butter and sub- marines for sale. Jakubowski often enlists the aid of her three daughters to help out at the front counter. They are 14-year-old Kathy, 13-year-old Anna, and Caroline, who is soon to be four years of age. She has been married to Ted for over 15 years now, and her husband also pit- ches in at the bakery from time to time when he is not busy with his job at the town's Kimberly-Clark mill. Another recent change for the shop has been the: addition of pizza and chicken sales on Sundays from 4 to 7 p.m. The store | is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. in the morn- ing until 10:30 p.m., and 11 p.m. on the weekend. "I'd like to thank our customers for always com- ing back for more," Jakubowski said, adding that they know her bread is good and good for you, baked with ~ no preservatives. OFAH says stop acid rain "Stop Acid Rain" is the theme of an exciting new merchandising campaign launched this week by con- servation organizations across Canada in a co- operative effort to focus public attention on the most serious environmental threat the nation has ever faced, an Ontario Federa- tion of Anglers and Hunters news release an- nounced last week. The campaign's logo, which depicts a dead maple leaf falling off the Cana- dian flag, is featured on a full range of T-shirts, sweatshirts, sweaters, jog- ging jackets, coffee mugs, and boat flags which are being sold to raise money for Canadian acid rain research and_ public awareness programs. The products are being distributed nationally by Ir- win Toy Limited and pro- vincially in Ontario by the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, the group credited with bring- ing acid rain to the atten- tion of the Canadian public in the 1970s. "The first public display and sale of products was at the Toronto Sportsmen's Show, March 14-23, the OFAH release added. "Acid rain is killing our fish, sterilizing our lakes, weakening our forests, cor- roding our buildings, stressing our agricultural crops, and even threatening our health," said national chairman of the campaign, Rick Morgan, Executive Vice President of the On- tario Federation of Anglers and Hunters. '"By purchas- ing these products Cana- dians can support the work being done across the country to Stop Acid Rain." Acid rain is the invisible pollution produced when industrial emissions and automobile exhausts mix with water vapour in the at- mosphere and fall to earth. Already 180,000 lakes in eastern Canada are threatened by acid rain and Canada's forest industry is losing $200 million worth of timber each year. Acid rain has been likened to lung problems in children and to the abnormal ab- sorption of heavy metals by moose, deer and fish. Avoid errors ..... continued from page 11 Taxpayers made approx- imately 220,000 errors claiming tuition fees and more than 218,000 with the child tax credit. Incorrect claims for charitable/medical deduc- tions accounted for more than 208,000 errors. Processing error-free returns at all seven taxation centres across Canada takes approximately four weeks, and each year three out of four Canadian tax- payers get refunds. However, the biggest single cause of delay in is- suing refunds is lack of supporting documentation or other information on tax returns. When tax returns with missing information or receipts are withdrawn from the system, taxpayers are contacted and the return cannot be processed until such time as the required data is received. While Revenue Canada -Taxation employees iden- tify and correct millions of errors, there are instances when this is not possible. If pertinent information is not included in the return, neither a departmental employee nor the computer can know if a taxpayer is entitled to claim a par- ticular deduction. Taxpayers should therefore take the time to carefully review their return and ensure that all the necessary information is included.
