Squash is gaining in Fish in danger In a comprehensive 12 page brief released earlier this month, the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters calls on the government to adopt 21 specific proposals for im- proved management of lake trout fisheries. The OFAH, Ontario's largest provincial conser- vation association, has drawn on both scientific studies and the first-hand knowledge of provincial fishermen in preparing its brief. The group's recommen- dations include better water level management to pro- tect lake trout eggs, in- creased monitoring of and research on acid rain, lake trout spawning shoal im- provement and construc- tion, and other suggestions. According to a January 6 news release, the associa- tion has shown through scientific studies that holding young lake trout in hatcheries until they are larger significantly in- creases their chances of survival in the wild. The release pointed out that lake trout are vulnerable, sensitive fish which mature later than other fish and require special attention. Ontario has approximately 2,000 lake trout lakes but in 74 of those lakes the trout have already disappeared. The OFAh has also re- quested more Conservation Officers and higher fines for poachers.
