GREER Persons aged 65 years and older who are re- ceiving the Old Age: Security Pension and who have little or no other income are eligible to receive an extra pay- ment attached to their monthly Old Age Se- curity Pension cheque. This additional income is provided by the Fed- eral Government through their Guaran- teed Income Supple- ment Program. The sup- plement is intended to help support retired per- sons who have little or no additional income. In order to receive the supplement an _ appli- cation for benefit must be completed by an indi- vidual when~ reaching age 65 and every year thereafter. The amount of supplement that a person receives is based on their marital sta- tus and yearly income. Basically any monies re- ceived are considered income for Income Tax purposes must be re- ported when applying for the Guaranteed In- come Supplement. Ex- amples of income that must be, reported on the supplement applica- tions . include: Unem- 'ployment Insurance Benefits, net interest re- ceived from banks, bonds or mortgages, net dividents and/or net capital gains or losses, net rents from property, net income from self employment, income from other sources (i.e. alimony, trust funds, Registered Retire- ment Savings, etc.). Persons who have re- cently reached their 65th birthday will auto- matically receive an ap- plication for the Guar- anteed Income Supple- ment, and provided they qualify for the sup- plement, the Federal Government will for- ward a ren2wal appli- cation each year. This month, persons who received the sup- plement last year will be receiving their renewal applications. These re- newal applications must be filled out and sent to the Federal Govern- ment will forward a per- ment as soon as possi- ble. However, to ensure accuracy, it is best to wait until all income information slips are re- ceived before complet- ing your application. If, after receiving all your income information slips, you require assist- ance in completing your application, or if you have not received your application, contact the Northern Affairs office. If after filing your application your martial status and/or financial circumstances change, the Federal Govern- ment must be notified to ensure. that you will receive the supple- mentary income appro- priate to your situa- tion. If you require as- sistance, Northern Af- fairs can help.
