Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, February 14, 1984, page 3 Rossport WVotes Crime Prevention initiated in Rossport by ANNE TODESCO Over thirty residents of Rossport met at the community hall last Tuesday evening for a public meeting concern- ing Crime Prevention. The purpose of the meeting was to acquaint the residents with the planning and ways that people can assist, in overcoming the wave of crime in a community. This is the first of such a programme being formed in this area. Members of the com- mittee are Dave Iddi- son, Debbie MacLean, Lorraine Seppala, Linda Joiner, Louise Stefu- rak and Juris Zdanov- skis. Police officers attend- ing the meeting were Cor. Don Burton and Officer Don Anderson of Schreiber's detach- ment of the O.P.P. Dave Iddison welcomed them 'to the meeting, and thanked: them for offer- ing their assistance in information regarding the formation of a "Neighbourhood Watch" group, so that they may work together to prevent crime. The officers showed slides displaying various types of locks available for windows and doors. Don Anderson pointed out the most preferable locks recommended to use for home security. He pointed out to the vil- lagers how careless property owners can be in the locking of their premises while they are absent from the home. He suggested that peo- ple would be wise to install a peep-hole in their doors so they could examine the person wanting admission be- fore opening the door, especially those living in apartments. It was suggested that property owners would always: 1. Advise the police security whenever they expect to be away for any length of time. 2. Always leave a light burning, especially the 'off and 'on' lights. 3. Tell where they are going and how they can be reached in case of an emergency. 4. When you plan to return home. 5. Leave a spare key with a neighbour. 6. Have someone cut the grass or shovel the snow from doorways. 7. Have someone to collect your papers or notices on the door or step. 8. If possible leave a car on the driveway. An engraving tool was on display. It is used for marking valuables for identification: It proved very interesting. One could be purchased to use by the villagers. Booklets and brochures , were distributed that of- fered useful instruct- ions and advice. A book was given to each per- son that could be used to list all their furniture, clothing, jewellery and articles. Guest speaker and demon- strator was Mrs. Grace Parker of Thunder Bay. Thirteen neighbours at- tended and refresh- ments were served. To develop this pro- gramme in a community is to do so through your local police, but the pro- gramme can only suc- ceed if each property owner would take an active role in both the security improvement on his home and also by observation. A person could make notes on any strange or unknown per- sons loitering or suspi- cious in appearance, strange cars parked in odd places, the colour, make and the licence number. Immediately call the police and the neighbourhood watch group. : A short movie on crime was shown on how the police can appre- hend the guilty per- son. Corporal Burton ex- plained a_ policeman's duties and services. A policeman's duties in- cluded his patrolling time, hours on shift, assistance given and of course their -training. The officers were very pleased with the res- ponse received from the questionnaire sent out to people. A person report- ing a crime doesnot need to have his name made known to the pub- lic if he so desires. Refreshments were served by the commit- tee and Chairman Iddi- son voiced his apprecia- tion to the officers for their assistance. Good teeth are basic to good health.
