Terrace Bay leads the way in safety With the public em- phasis that has been placed on safety aware- ness and emergency health care, it is only fitting that you are made aware of what is being done in the local area in this regard. Since January 3rd of 84, members of the Terrace Bay Volunteer Fire Department and the Recreation Centre have been taking an active part in the St. John's Ambulance Safety Or- iented Standard First Aid Course. The course is 16 weeks in length and is being sponsored by the Workman's Com- ' pensation Board. The course is being conducted by Instructor- Examiner Ray Mark of Terrace Bay, and is be- ing held at Kimberly Clark's Training Cen- tre, with full use of their facility and training equipment. The primary aim of this course is to in- struct individuals on the techniques of administ- ering first aid in emer- gency situations, plus to promote an awareness of safety hazards and basically how to prevent accidents from happen- ing. "The thrust of this venture is to promote 'safety awareness', stat- ed Ray Mark, Instructor, "and the phrase best suited to describe this course is 'timely and ap- propriate first aid'." Ray stated that this is a multi-media _ course, utilizing films, work- books and: practical exercises. The course also includes three writ- ten tests that corres- pond with the workbook exercises and films, as well as three practical evaluations (involving re-enactments of inci- dents) that are overseen and graded by the in- structor-examiner. "Both the written and practical examina- tions are equally im- portant. I may find someone who knows their text book from front to back, but has no expertise in the practical exercises. They must be able to prove to me that they are equally cap- able of knowing both ends, before I can certify students Moe Stark and Ros Kenney. reasonable degree of progress towards the at- tainment. of specified knowledge and skill ob- jectives; (b) demons- trate an acceptable level of proficiency in performing selected cri- tical skills, as specified in the 'Guidelines for Practical Exercises,' and (c) the student must have achieved an overall average of at least 75 them as having suc- cessfully completed the course," stated Ray. To receive certifica- tion, the student must (a) demonstrate throughout the course, a Seen here is Instructor Ray Mark demonstrating splinting methods for a leg fracture to. It is useful and essential for the instructor to be well informed on local condi- tions which affect the ONTARIO BLUE CROSS student body, especially with regards to special ' hazards to which they may be exposed, and the frequency of various types of injuries. This type of knowledge will enable Ray to reinforce the teaching of safety principles by direct ref- erence to situations in| which students are most: likely to feel a degree of personal involvement. ; The course is conducted ' in 'a climate of safety' -' with the instructor set-' ting the example.
