Hospital Update by ELLEN HODGKISS As Christmas ap- proaches, the McCaus- land Hospital is taking on a festive appearance. The huge _ outdoor Christmas tree is alight with coloured bulbs and the ladies of the hospi- tal Auxiliary are busily working on treats for the patients and decorating the interior of the hospi- tal. Santa Claus will be paying his annual visit and presenting gifts, and it is expected that a group of Brownies will entertain with carolling. The staff has held their Christmas dance and the Board of Governors will host a wine and cheese party for the staff. Al- together it is a joyful and active time of the year. Events of importance that have taken place over the past few months are as follows: The second annual Long Service awards banquet was held in October and those receiving their pins this year were Christine. Handy, Presi- dent of the Board of Governors; Marjorie Hamilton, representa- tive from the Terrace Bay Municipal Council; each of whom received 5-year pins, and Bar bara DeJonghe, who re- ceived her pin for 10 years of service. The expansion of the laboratory has been completed, which now provides more space for lab work and space for the installation of a blood bank, approval for which from the Minis- try of Health is expected very shortly. Altera- tions to the meeting room affected by this expansion are nearing completion and should be ready for use in a matter of days. A new addition to the hospital is a computer, and all accounting will be computerized, the re- sult of which will be more efficiency and bet- ter productivity. The - recent Ontario Hospital Association convention held in To- ronto, was attended by the Director of Nursing Aurele Piche; Adminis- trator Don Ross and Chairman of Public Re- lations, Ellen Hodgkiss. The theme of this year's convention was "Priori- ties for Progress', and many of the sessions were directed towards the new monitoring sys- tem for hospitals known as Quality Assurance. This system is being adopted by many hospi- tals and is mandatory for those applying for ac- creditation. It is intend- ed to upgrade the qual- ity of care to patients and we are proud to report that our hospital has already started to implement this system and should be com- pletely in effect within the next year or two. That is the year the hotel was built. It was known as The Oriental Hotel and was built by a Mr. Spencer. Then we come to 1881 when the CPR celebrat- ed its anniversary and that is the year that Captain George Gerow sailed up the lakes from Toronto with his family and furniture in a sail- boat that he had built himself. Well, white people were already in settlement here at that time - many French, Scotch and Irish immi- grants, some Scandi- navians, and some from England. Going fur- ther back into the 1760's again we find that there was a settlement here. So, when do we cele- brate our Centennial year? More research work will have to be done before the right year can be authentic. The village was a fur trading centre. Many artifacts have been found in the area, es- pecially along the shore- line, the sand bar re- gion, and the islands. There is a trea- sure trove for those that like digging and searching for these mu- seum pieces. Most of the finds have found their way into museums far from here which should have been kept in the area where they were discovered, Not too long ago, archaeologists, deep divers and others in- vestigated a sight on one of the islands. Sod had been removed carefully and replaced over the site to protect it from being destroyed. It must have been a good loca- tion for this type of work or hobby.
