Northern Affairs ~ Ontario Property and Sales Tax for Seniors by JANE E. GREER Since 1980, the On- tario Government through the Ministry of Revenue has been pro- viding Property and Sales Tax Grants to eli- gible seniors as an at- tempt to help these indi- viduals cope with the rising costs of living. The Property Tax Grant is a grant of up to $500.00 per house- hold provided by the Government to help off- set the municipal and school taxes paid an- nually by persons 65 years of age and over, who own their own homes. For seniors who rent their accommoda- tion the Property Tax Grant takes the form of a subsidy that equals 20 per cent of the rent paid up to a maximum level of $500.00. The Sales Tax Grant is a grant of $50.00 pro- vided (without applica- tion) to seniors to help offset the provincial sales taxes paid an- nually. The Ontario Property ,and Sales Tax Grants are provided to eligible seniors regardless of the amount of their annual income. However, as the Ontario Government provides a minimum an- nual accommodation subsidy of $8,760 per person for residents of nursing homes, homes for the aged, chronic care facilities, charit- able institutions, homes for special care or simi- lar institutions; these individuals do not qual- ify for the Ontario Pro- perty Tax. grant. Applications for the Property Tax Grant are now being mailed to individuals who were either 65 years. of age or who became 65 years of age as of July 1983. Individuals who were 65 years of age or older in 1982 will have already received their first installment of their pro- perty tax grant and upon completing this appli- cation, will receive the balance of the payment up to the maximum of $500.00. For those in- dividuals who turned 65 years of age in 1983 (before July) upon com- pleting this applica- tion they will receive their grant in one pay- ment. Individuals who turned. 65 on or after July 1983, will receive their applications for the 1983 grant in January 1984. Should you require assistance in completing this form please contact your nearest Northern Affairs Office. If you reached your 65th birth- day before July 1983, and you have not re- ceived your application for the Ontario Property Tax Grant by the end of September, you should contact the Ministry of Revenue to request an application by asking the operator for Ze- nith 8-2000. Here is a reminder to all people intending to use the Aguasabon Generating Station area to fish in the up-coming salmon run. Ontario Hydro will prosecute under The Trespass To Property Act if anyone is caught fishing from the 'tail-race' area of the station. New fencing was erected in July of this year in order to prevent individuals from using the - 'tailrace' for fishing, etc. Due to the extreme speed of the water racing through the tailrace, the fencing is there to protect the people. "Danger" signs as well as "'No trespassing"' signs are posted at all angles and are clearly visible to everyone, should they consider using this area to do their fishing from.
