The game of water Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, August 24, 1983, page 7 polo is not just a compe- titive team sport. Great emphasis is placed on 1) fun 2) fundamentals and 3) fitness. An official water polo game, between Terrace, Bay and Marathon was scheduled to take place in Terrace Bay. last Sun- day. An Awards Cere- mony, plus a team get- to-gether was also on the agenda. Due to our Friday deadline, re- sults of this game were unobtainable. We'll keep you posted on their progress however. You have probably heard of an ideal couple who live the lives of Romeo and Juliet, a perfect couple united forever, for better or for worse... You have probably crushed such a couple under your feet! Look closely at the multi- coloured crust covering this rock. It is a type of plant called a Lichen. The major characteristic. of Lichens is that they are formed of a mush- room and: a microscop- ic algae living in symbio- sis is much like a per- fect marriage where the two partners form an association that is both long living and benefi- o . -Theideal marriage cial to both. In this ver special couple, the alga produces the food ne cessary for the survive of the. two partners while the mushroom ar chors to the substrat and furnishes mineral and moisture for the a! gae. This union permit the plant to survive i places that are inhosp' table to other plants bare rocks, tree trunks and even survive up t _ 60 weeks without a dro of water! The cost fo the lichens is that the grow very slowly though their longevity i phenomenal. The Easte Islands statues hav continued on page !
