Women's health project gets grant The Health Promo- tion Directorate of Health and Welfare, Ca- nada has_~ granted $230,619.00 to the Northwestern Ontario Women's Health Edu- cation Project for its next two years of oper- ation. The Project will use the funds to deliver six health-related work- shops to women in fif- teen communities throughout -- Northwest- ern Ontario. The first series of workshops will focus on Women and Nutrition. It will run from Septem- ber to November, 1983. In mid-winter, Cabin Fe- ver Il, a workshop on stress and coping with small town life is sched- uled. A menopause workshop is planned for April-May 1984. Finally, a training session will be held in June, 1984 for regional women _inter- ested in learning how to deliver workshops. In 1984-85, tentative plans include a confer- ence on Women and Health as well as tra- velling workshops on women's cancer, patient rights and preventa- tive health care. During its first year of operation (1982-83), the health project conducted a Cubin Fever work- shop and an extensive survey of regional wo- men. The survey asked women about their health status and what types of workshops they would be interested in attending. The work- shops that are being de- veloped reflect these women's wishes. Overfilled propane vehicles dangerous Propane filling sta- tion operators and at- tendants in Ontario are being warned of the dangers of overfilling propane-vehicle fuel tanks in a letter from the Fuels Safety. Branch of the Ontario Ministry of Consumer and Commer- cial Relations. The warning follows reports that automatic stop-fill valves installed in some vehicles do not work properly. The let-: ter stresses the import-' ance of using the fixed. liquid level fuel gauge - a compulsory system in- stalled in every propane vehicle. Before starting to fill a vehicle attendants, who hold a certificate issued by the fuels Safety Branch must open the outlet valve of the liquid level fuel guage. When liquid propane _ starts coming out of the valve, the tank is filled. to maximum capacity and fuelling should be stop- ped immediately. \ The Propane Code, u nder the Energy Act, states that a propane tank should not be filled above the 80-per cent level. An overfilled tank is a serious fire ha- zard. Propane needs room to expand if it is heated, and without the 20 per cent expansion space liquid propane can be released outside the vehicle through the pressure relief valve. Escaped propane can be set off by the smallest spark. Fuels Safety Branch Director, John Patter- son, warns that overfill- ing propane tanks is ille- gal and. dangerous. "Drivers who ask an attendant to ignore the fuel guage and pump a few more litres into the tank risk losing their vehicle, home or life," he says. '"'It's not a fair exchange for a few extra kilometres between fuel- ling stops."' Mr. Patterson also warns that an attendant who is convicted of over- filling a tank is liable to a fine of up to $10,000, one year in jail or both.
