Profile This Week Meet Kevin Duguay - Schreiber Rec Director by KAREN PARK What would happen to a small town without recreation? No one would care to venture a guess. Recreation plays a very important role not only in small communi- ties but also in large centres and cities. It takes a special kind of person to keep most of the people happy - most of the time, and Schreiber Rec Director, ~ Kevin Duguay is just one of those special types. Kevin and his wife Denise moved into the town of Schreiber just a little over one year ago, from the metropolis of Toronto. Not only was the Recreation Director job opening a chance of a life time, but when the opportunity became available in a town such as Schreiber which housed a new recreation complex with good facil- ities, Kevin jumped at the chance. Kevin has always - been recreational orient- ed... having been raised in a family that was heavy on sports. From the time he was of a young age, Kevin re- members being involved in just about every- thing from hockey to water polo. He partici- pated in competitive wa- ter polo for more years than he can remember, plus competitive swim- ming and All Star base- ball. And if that wasn't enough of a load, he also played an active role in coaching a lot of minor sports. He was very active in R.L.S.S. (the Royal Life Saving So- ciety). When asked if he had won any special awards throughout his life, he answered, "When I played competitive wat- er polo at the University of Waterloo, I was a Varsity Letterman," having been awarded the letter for his out- standing accomplish- ments in the sport. While at the Univer- sity of Waterloo, Kevin majored in Urban and Rural Planning, hoping to carry on his career as either a Recreation Con- sultant or a Recreation Director. Consultants were being phased out of the market, so Kevin decided to go into rec- reation as a director. Kevin had previously done a great deal of volunteer work ,with sport organizations and spent most of his sum- mers working in rec- reation departments. He had the opportunity to become the Community Centre Director for the city of Windsor, and this greatly attributed to his chosen career. Upon moving to Student loan increase "I am very pleased that following Parlia- ment's approval of Bill C-161, full-time post- secondary students ac- ross Canada will now be able to benefit from in- creased federal assist- ance to more effective- ly meet the rising costs of education," said Mr. Joyal. The Minister also not- ed that other amend- ments to the Canada Student Loans Act will take effect September 1, 1983. These changes in- clude a program of in- terest relief for unem- ployed former student borrowers, loans to part-time stud- ents attending post- secondary universities and colleges and a spe- cial provision for the temporary and' perma- nently disabled borrow- er. i ' a LAWRENCE TRAFFORD healed of bronchial asthma, eczema and eye problems. guaranteed © The Honourable Serge Joyal, Secretary of State of Canada, to- day announced that as a result of the passage of Bill C-161 amending the Student Loans Act, the weekly loan limit for Canada Student Loans will increase from $56.25 to $100 per week, as of August 1, 1983. Schreiber Kevin had several ideas that he wanted to ~ follow through on and many of them have already been accomplished. When questioned of the first priority that he had when he assumed his new title of Director, Kevin stated that pro- gramming ranked high on his list. "I wanted to re-organize depart- ments where it was ne- cessary and I also want- ed to create a positive direction for the rec- reation department that would meet the needs of the people of Schrei- ber. I was also met with the challenge of meeting the populace of Schreib- er and acquainting my- self with their ideas on recreation ... what they wanted to see take place and what they had little interest in."' "And on top of all that," he laughs, 'I wanted to get my house 'and my family organiz- ed."' Other ideas that Kev- in had, he has either put in place or is still at- tempting to follow through on. Included in these ideas were new playground facilities, a good, competitive mixed adult softball program- me, ball hockey and the re-establishment of the Schreiber Winter Carni- val. Kevin was instru- mental in bringing in the Labatt's "Original 6" hockey show and it was met with much audi- ence enthusiasm. Kevin hopes to become more involved with the Re- gional Programmes that are currently available on the North Shore, such as a minor hockey "Tiny Tournament'. Kevin is always striv- ing to achieve better rec- reation for the area and included in his plans are an adult softball tourn- ament and more sup- port given to individual groups such as minor hockey, boxing and fig- ure skating. "If it wasn't for these groups and many others like them, the town of Schreiber would notice quite a chance."' When asked what his major goals were, Kevin stated that he would like to see improvements made on the baseball and play field and better play ground facilities., '*I would very much like to see a substantial in- crease in tourism around Schreiber. We have so much to offer and we definitely have the po- tential with the two parks just outside of Schreiber. The estab- lishment of an Econom- ic Development Com- mittee will certainly be very beneficial to our town and this group should be given every- one's full support."' The job of Rec Direct- or leaves Kevin little time for his personal hobbies but when time allows he certainly takes advantage of it. "I enjoy _many hobbies, some recreation oriented, some not so much."' Kevin can be found on many occasions in the weight training room at the recreation complex and when he's not there he could be seen out running his two dogs - sitting, listening to a variety of music - or cooking up a gourmet meal (but only when his wife Denise lets him in the kitchen). "The philosophy of my life is to enjoy ... prosper ... and to take care of my wife." Keep up the good work Kevin!
