Annual Meeting | gama y HARRY HUSKINS Lake Nipigon's Progressive Conserva- tives.met in Schreiber on the weekend of July 23 and 24 for their Annual Meeting. Ontario Treasurer Larry Grossman was the key-note speaker at a Dinner held on Saturday evening at the Recreation Complex in Schreiber. Grossman has served for several years as Minister of Health in the provincial govern-. ment and was recently appointed as Treasurer to succeed Frank Miller. In introducing Gross- man Fort William MPP Mickey Hennessey said that he was, "The most astute politician in Queen's Park. I would have no hesitation in supporting Mr. Grossman at anytime he wanted to stand for the leadership. I have had a lot of respect for Mr. Grossman. He is someone who will listen to you when you go to talk to him. It's nice to have someone who understands the problems of _ the North."' PC Riding President Joe Figliomeni continued in the same vein saying, "I would like to introduce the next Premier of Ontario." Grossman, however, dampened the enthusiasm for a potential leadership bid on his part when he rose to speak. "Let's make it clear that I have no plans as the Premier would say. There is no vacancy."' In addition to MPP Mickey Hennessey, other. out of town guests at the Dinner included the Presidents of the Port, Arthur and_ Fort William PC Riding Associations and members of the Fort William Riding Executive. In his remarks following the meal, Grossman said that he was familiar with Northern Ontario. He reviewed his experience in dealing with northern hospitals and with the forestry companies. Grossman went on. to speak on his theme for the evening, "It's time we all sat back and took a look at what I call the quality of life issue."' The new Treasurer outlined the ways in which the provincial government helps communities with small tax bases such as Schreiber. "In this way we contribute to the quality of life that is basic in this area. Someone has to say something is right here. It works. Something is being done right. What's happening here is a coming together of. people and a coming together of government policy. And it only works when both of them come together." Grossman outlined several contributions he said that the Conservative govern- ment has made to the quality' of life in the area. He spoke about the spirit of the people of Nipigon and their need for a new hospital, and then announced that "In fact it will happen. He spoke about the development of natural resources especially golf, iron ore and zinc in the North."' Speaking about Schreiber, Grossman stressed the contribution the government has made "to enable you to keep your high school."? He went on to speak about the government's initia- tives in the care of the elderly and_ the introduction of an air ambulance service. In concluding his remarks, Grossman dwelt on what he referred to as the government's success- ful record in promoting the forest industry and at the same time controlling pollution. "This has happened in no other jurisdiction. Else- where it has involved a massive trade-off. Either you control pollution or lose jobs, or you keep the jobs and allow the pollution to run uncontrolled. How did we do that. It's you the, people who Limited Local Representative ] Juris Z. Grossman. said that, "The major environmental _prob- lem we have is not with the pulp and paper industry, but with acid rain from the U.S. We have not only stabilized jobs, but we have cleaned up the environment. I want Yous = 4 remember that, when we talk about the quality of life in Northern Ontario. In any .other jurisdiction the government would have done one of two things. Pulled out and let the job go, or allowed the pollution to continue."' At the Party's Annual Meeting on Sunday, Joe Figliomeni = of Schreiber was re- elected Riding President.
