Fish Derby.... continued from page 1 owing to the invasion of the lamprey eel in Lake Superior. Now that the fish are com- ing back and with the enthusiasm of Cyril Brassard in bringing back our Derby to its past glory and popu- larity, it was possible to hold the first reviv- ed derby in 1982. It proved a success. June 25 and 26th are the Derby dates to meet at Rossport. Get ready for this. big event as thousands of dollars in various kinds of prizes are being offered. Ross- portites are being en- couraged to dress up the village and put on its holiday appearan- ce. Three organiza- tions are involved in the planning and manning of the booths. They are the Rossport Fire Fight- ers, The Community Hall Committee and the Rossport Water Association. All mon- ies cleared will be used for the better- ment of the commun- ity. The booths will be offering food, pop, coffee, confections and novelties for the people's convenien- ce. Derby time brings the village population up to about two or three thousand from its usual 250 per- sons. Owners of boats are already arriving to find anchorage in the harbour basin. Big and small cabin cruis- ers, motor boats, sail- boats -- you name it and we have them anchored here ready to pull out on Derby day for their favoured fishing spots. One pleasant thought about the Derby is that old friends from the area, other parts of this great country of ours and our across the border can greet each other -- just like old times with hundreds vieing for the numer- ous prizes being off- ered. The old picture of tents, campers, mobile homes and trailers and convert- ed buses as homes on wheels will be sprou- ting up in every avail- able park and road- side area. The peaceful charm of the bay and is- lands provides an un- Surpassed scenic beauty for a restful and quiet camping holiday. But Derby time brings song and dance into the scene amongst the ' tents, cars and picnic areas. They put on a sort of carnival air - camp fires, boats buzzing about, endless cars winking and blinking their lights through the night and every- one in a happy mood. Mustn't leave the sea- gulls out of the pic- ture with their trail- ing of the boats out of the harbour or hover- ing about the camping areas looking for a handout. They never seem to be filled up -- their appetites are never ending -- one wonders just how they manage to fly or even lift themselves off the ground after gorging so much food. Must not forget that their hoarse and mournful Screaming voices all adding to the din of Confirmation at Holy Angels On the evening of June 2nd at 7:00 p.m. in. Holy Angels Church, in Schreiber, 47 candidates as well as sponsors, family and friends gathered for a Confirmation Mass. Congratula- tions to all the can- didates and thank you to all who helped pre- pare them for this memorable day. the derby festival. It is only three weeks till the boats will be leaving the harbour at the signal given at eight a.m. on Derby Sunday. If one took an airplane tour overhead, they would be surprised at the number of boats of every description that will be heading out to favourite fishing grounds. They will be speckling the water for miles in every direction possible. The contestants can fish in distant lake spots or even in the harbour and just come up with a _ winning fish. Then come the boats returning to have the sports- men. weigh in their catches 'and examine the other fish already on display -- expec- tations rise. Every- where excitement -- you can picture the people impatient to learn who will be the lucky winner to carry home the thousand dollar entry prize. So much excitement will be prevailing that Sunday evening. It is great to have this national sport event. patronized by sportsmen through- Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, June 15, 1983, page 9 out Northern Ontario and points afar. The Rossport area is noted for its peaceful charm and quiet camping areas away from the noisy modern cities. A simple boating ex- perience along the majestic shoreline and among the isl- ands gives one a rich holiday to remember. Ducks, birds of many species are seen, an odd moose or deer can be seen on the shores of islands and occa- sionally foxes are sighted. The sheer beauty of cliffs, for- 'ests, flowers, sail- boats or tugs plying the waterways and far out in the open water, steamships.
