I don't know if it means much to a non-mining person. What it says, in effect, is that there is a very good chance of a large mine being built there, which could eventually provide 500-700 direct jobs. The spinoff jobs in a mining community are traditionally seven for every one, so you are talking about a long term potential of upwards of 4,000 jobs. But first metal prices have to improve. Falconbridge has to make a decision to build the mine, and a 2-4 year phase of construction must be completed, for which much of the specialized labour would be imported on a temporary basis. Until a mine is actually producing, the whole thing is very iffy. But if you combine that with the Hemlo discoveries to the east, it is clear to me that the economic face of your area is going to change during the next four to five years. This is a short time in mining years as. many camps such as Red Lake take 30 years or more to fully develop. Mining is a tough industry, very cyclical, and as a result there will be many ups and downs during the next twenty years. However, these two operations look like they would - be fairly well insulated from downturns because the ore they have discovered is high grade. There is an important, but secondary, gold rush going on to the northeast of Terrace Bay, where five or six of the two dozen companies that have staked proper- ties will be working this summer. This should at the very least, provide some spinoff money from motels and restaurants etc. for your towns.
