Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, January 12, 1983, page 3 Letters to the Editor Letters to the Editor are always welcome. If you have an opinion on any subject of public importance, we would like to give you an op- portunity to express it. Just write to The Editor, The News, Terrace Bay, Ontario. The Editor, This writeup is meant for those people who own dogs, especially big dogs, who allow them to 'be running at large, everyone has_ back yards, and if you can't take the time to walk them, then exercise them on a clothesline. There is a dog law in this town which states that dogs do not run around by themselves, that they must be exer- cised on a leash, tied in yards, or fenced.: Exer- cised on a leash does not mean that the owners walk on the street while the dog runs all over everyone's property. There's also supposed to be a chap who controls that law, but where he is most times is something T have yet to find out. If he was doing his job, there would not be dogs running all over, like they have full priority in this town. Children would be safe to play without dogs attacking them and those dog owners who do think enough of their pets to walk them on leashes would perhaps be able to walk them in the wooded areas and around this town with- out having to go armed to the teeth. You never know whose dog you are going to meet, either alone or with it's master along, but without any collar or leash. A couple of weeks ago someone complained about their dog being shot. Pity that dog for he was the one who had the misery of such an event, had the owner taken the time to walk his dog, it likely wouldn't have been shot. There will be more of that. If you dog owners don't get the lead out and walk your dogs, if you are too lazy to see to the attention -- your animal needs and deserves, then the solu- tion is very simple. Don't own a dog. I own two dogs, and I love them. They are my friends and company. Neither could fight their way out of a paper bag, but it really bugs me when I take them for a walk in the woods and along comes this big bully looking for a fight, and a great many I meet are pretty aggressive. Not only could I be bitten, but my dogs could be injured or worse yet killed, so why I want to know are dogs allowed to be on the loose? Another thing about owners and their dogs I dislike is those owners who don't allow their dogs to use their own back yards to relieve themselves in before walking them on the streets of the Plaza. Those who practice such should be made to clean it up as well, and down on the path and in the grassy area leading to the newspaper office there's usually such trademarks. Whoever owns such animals should have the decency to clean up and not leave it for the general public to walk through.
