LEGION REMEMBRANCE DAY CEREMONY SCHREIBER The Remembrance Day ceremony at the Cenotaph, now in its new site at the Legion was attend by a large crowd this year, with Gino Caccamo as the M.C. Frank McKenna, Jack Winters and Hobden spite yi were the colour bearers and Fred Gould, of Terrace Bay, the bugler. Add- ing to the dignaty of the occasion this year was the presence of members of the Lake Surerior Scottish Regiment (Terrace Bay) Capt. Bryan Lever and Privates John Bouchard and Richard Evoy. Father Harold Bartofski, of Holy Angels Church, was the speaker for the occasion. The annual banquet was attended by 65 with Bill Collinson as the M.C. Head table guests included Deborah Stewart, of Terrace Bay, the first woman Lawyer resident in the district; J. P. Kelso, C.P. Rail Schreiber Superintendent; Reeve Harold McParland and their wives. Mr. Kelso briefly spoke of the cost of war, in lives and the freedom won by the sacrifice paid, that we should always be aware of the freedom we enjoy at such a price. Deborah Stewart, admitting she was too young to have real- ized the impact on lives, both on the battle ground, and those at home - wives and families, during wars, still, by reading and listening, she knew of the cost paid and she felt that from these wars, particularly the last one emerged the realization by women that their role of homemaker was not enough, and so entered the field of labour where they have remained. Georgina Davis, President of the Legion Women's Auxiliary, presented a cheque to Borden Ross, President of the Branch. A dance and social evening followed the dinner. ROSSPORT SOCIAL Mrs. Hilda Mushquash entertained her neighbours at a Tupper- ware party Sunday Afternoon with Mrs. Ron Lanigan of Nipigon demonstrating and offering a commentary on each article. dis- played. Many useful items were offered suitable for Christmas gifts. Mrs. Lanigan ran off several contests, winners being Devona Leisander, Mrs. Camilla Legault, Mrs. Ann Todesco and Mrs. Patsy Campbell. A luncheon was served by the hostess and a pleasant hour spent recalling cooking and conserving of food by one's parents and grandparents. and Miss Terry Ann Bouchard modelled the different types of jewellery. A tasty luch followed and a happy hour reminisc- ing on early recipes for cooking wild meat and herbs. GUEST SPEAKER HIGHLIGHT OF SCHREIBER WOMEN'S INSTITUTE MEETING Tuesday afternoon the Schreiber Branch of the Women's Insti- tute met in the Town Hall for the regular monthly meeting. The highlight of the meeting was an interesting paper and in=- formation on Youth Mental Retardation by Mrs. Georgette Cebrario who has done considerable work in this field. She explained that they are slow learners but can be" taught to be useful citizens in a community if people would only have pat- ience to help them and that the public should be educated regarding this affliction in so many young children. The President, Mrs. M. Slater welcomed the members and guests and regretted so few present on account of illness,or travelling. Roll call was responded to by each member dis- playing antique articles including 52 year old trousseau items men's spats and button on shirt collars, purses, music boxes, etc. The thought for day was presented by Mrs. Harness - "A Little Love Is More Precious Than A Lot of Money" and a sec- ond one of "Greater Love Hath No Man Than This, That A Man Lay Down His Life For His Friends", which was a fitting one for Remembrance Day. Many others were heard from the members. A one minute silence was observed for those who gave up their lives in the wars. The Motto for the month should be advice for the over- weight person - | You Wish To Become Thinner, Diminish Your Dinner! The current event discussions were very brisk and covered many topics. The minutes read by Mrs. Todesco were approved and signed while Mrs. Spillane presented a very satisfactory treasurers report. x Correspondence included a letter from Mrs. Clemens of Wiarton, a former member; notices from Miss Weisse, Home Ec- onomist regarding dates of leadership courses and the Card Secretary's Report. It was decided to have the annual bake sale in Hudson Bay Store on November 29 with Mrs. Spillane and Mrs. Campbell convening. Following adjournment, the monthly draw was won by Mrs. Harness and a contest by Mrs. Spillane. Robin Hood Flour Company recipe pamphlets were distributed and a socia hour enjoyed over tea served. Saturday evening Mrs. Josephone Hubelit hosted a Sarah Cov- entry jewellery party with Miss Beverly Legualt giving the story of how this jewellery company had started a small busi- ness in Eastern Ontario and described the styles and prices of the different rings, necklaces, bracelets etc. Miss Legault and the hostess Mrs. Hubelit ran off a few draws with Mrs. Mary Burnett and Mrs. Campbell winners.
